Blizzard did not hold BlizzCon in 2024. Instead, it said it planned to share game news through industry conventions and livestreams, stage Overwatch esports at DreamHack events, and hold in-person gatherings for Warcraft’s 30th anniversary. Those activities were not substitutes branded as BlizzCon, and the April announcement did not tie a particular game reveal to a particular event. Blizzard later confirmed BlizzCon would return in fall 2026 in Anaheim.
Why was BlizzCon 2024 canceled?
On April 25, 2024, Blizzard announced that it would not hold its convention that year. The company said it had reached the decision after consideration over the previous year and described it as difficult. It did not provide a more detailed reason, so claims that the cancellation was driven by budget, Microsoft, or a lack of announcements are not established by the announcement.
Blizzard also emphasized that BlizzCon remained important to it and that it hoped to bring the event back in future years. The announcement was a pause for 2024, not a declaration that the convention was over. Read Blizzard’s April 25 announcement, reproduced on Blue Tracker.
Where did Blizzard plan to share news instead?
Blizzard outlined several formats for keeping players informed and bringing communities together. They served different purposes: industry conventions and livestreams for updates, esports stops for competition, and anniversary gatherings for Warcraft fans.

| Format | What Blizzard said it planned |
|---|---|
| Industry conventions | More detail on 2024 launches, including World of Warcraft: The War Within and Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred; Gamescom was named as an example of an industry event. |
| Overwatch esports | Overwatch Champions Series stops at DreamHack Dallas and DreamHack Stockholm. |
| Warcraft anniversary gatherings | Multiple global in-person events for Warcraft’s 30th anniversary, alongside in-game celebrations across Warcraft games during 2024. |
| Livestreamed industry events | Several livestreams intended to keep people up to date about Blizzard’s game universes. |
Blizzard did not assign a particular reveal to Gamescom, DreamHack, or another named stop. Naming a venue or format signaled where updates might be shared, not a guarantee of a specific announcement there. The plans and examples above come from Blizzard’s April 2024 statement.
Were these events the same as BlizzCon?
No. Blizzard explicitly said the planned events would be distinct from BlizzCon, while aiming to preserve a similar spirit of celebration and togetherness. A trade-show appearance, esports tournament, anniversary gathering, or livestream can deliver news or bring fans together, but Blizzard did not present any one of them—or their combined schedule—as BlizzCon under another name.
