Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3 Episode 1 Is a Mediocre Premiere for an Epic Season

Part 3 begins at enormous scale, yet its premiere feels more like a bridge into the season than a fully compelling opening episode.

Spoiler-light review: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3 opens with the scale and stakes of a major clash, but its first episode is more effective as a bridge into the season than as a satisfying premiere on its own. Its reorientation and measured build-up hold back the immediate momentum a season opener needs.

Which episode this review covers

This is the Part 3 premiere of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, also listed as the Season 3 premiere. TV Guide dates it October 5, 2024, and summarizes its central conflict as a battle involving Squad Zero, Yhwach, and the Schutzstaffel; that is a secondary guide’s description, rather than an official episode synopsis. TV Guide’s Season 3 episode guide provides the listing.

Why it feels like a mediocre premiere

Reorientation takes room away from the opening drive

A returning viewer has to settle back into a crowded conflict and its stakes. That reorientation is useful in a serialized story, but it makes the episode feel less like a fresh launch and more like a continuation catching the audience up. The opening’s job is not only to remind viewers where the story stands; it also needs to create a clear new reason to lean forward. Here, that forward pull is comparatively muted.

The scale is clearer than the episode’s momentum

The battle’s participants signal that the conflict has reached an enormous scale. Yet scale alone does not make an opener feel propulsive: the episode’s rhythm gives the confrontation room to establish itself, rather than delivering a consistently escalating sequence of turns and payoffs. The result is a premiere whose promise is easier to feel than its immediate dramatic reward.

It sets a table more than it serves a course

As the first installment of a larger arc, this episode has a reasonable job: position the conflict and point toward what comes next. As a standalone premiere, though, its setup outweighs its sense of arrival. That distinction matters. Calling it mediocre is a judgment about this episode’s opening function, not a verdict on the season it introduces.

What the premiere does establish

The installment places the conflict around Squad Zero, Yhwach, and the Schutzstaffel, framing the new part around a decisive confrontation rather than a quiet reset. That gives the season a large-scale starting point and an obvious direction. Its weakness is not lack of ambition; it is that the premiere’s staging and reorientation do not convert that ambition into enough self-contained momentum.

The franchise’s official site describes BLEACH as a manga series that began in Weekly Shonen Jump and reports over 130 million volumes sold to date (year not stated). That figure speaks to the scale of the franchise, not to this episode’s audience or reception. The official site also describes the original television anime as a 366-episode series and lists Tomohisa Taguchi as series director and series-composition lead, Shiro SAGISU as musician, Masashi Kudo as character designer, and Studio Pierrot as animation producer. Those are franchise-level credits; they should not be read as a complete Part 3 production-credit list. BLEACH official anime site

Who should keep watching?

If you are already invested in the Thousand-Year Blood War and want the next stretch of its central conflict, this premiere supplies a clear bridge into the season. If you need an opener to feel rewarding on its own—through brisk re-entry, strong episode-level payoff, or a sharp new hook—this one is less persuasive. Its value lies chiefly in what it positions, not in how fully it resolves the work of beginning again.

Should you read the manga instead?

The manga is an optional way to experience the broader BLEACH story in its original medium; the official franchise site identifies the anime’s source as a manga series. This review does not establish which manga volume corresponds to Part 3 Episode 1, so it cannot recommend a specific volume as an episode-to-page substitute. BLEACH official series overview
