Spoiler warning: This ranking covers major manga-canon developments through the Thousand-Year Blood War endgame. Ichigo Kurosaki’s strongest configuration is not settled by an official numerical ranking: the order below is an editorial comparison of demonstrated peak combat capability. Control, duration, and cost are considered separately, so a one-use transformation is not treated as a sustainable fighting form.

How this ranking works

Ichigo’s forms reflect changing access to powers tied to his heritage, not simply a succession of stronger outfits. The official Thousand-Year Blood War character profile says he becomes a Substitute Soul Reaper after his encounter with Rukia Kuchiki. The anime’s official glossary describes Hollow and Quincy powers as inherited parts of the power represented by Zangetsu. Later forms therefore involve awakening, controlling, or combining abilities as well as increasing combat output.

The ranking is based on what each configuration demonstrates in combat, with special weight given to the caliber of opponents and the circumstances of the fight. Official sources describe selected abilities and costs, but do not publish a complete power scale for every form. The middle placements are an editorial synthesis, not an official hierarchy. “Power” here means peak combat capability; it does not mean reliability, stamina, or overall usefulness in every situation.

Ichigo forms ranked from weakest to strongest

  1. Early Substitute Soul Reaper and Shikai

After gaining Soul Reaper power through Rukia, Ichigo fights with a large, sealed Zanpakuto that quickly gives way to its distinctive Shikai form. This is his baseline combat configuration: it establishes his speed, strength, and swordsmanship, but precedes the major power developments that define the later entries.

Control and cost: This is the most repeatable stage of the ranking. It does not depend on a short-lived transformation, though the early story’s progression means this baseline should not be confused with Ichigo’s later, more developed Shikai.

  2. Bankai

Bankai compresses Ichigo’s power into a faster, more combat-focused configuration. It is a major step beyond his initial Shikai, but it is not the end of his development: later conflicts reveal new sources of power and more extreme transformations.

Control and cost: Ichigo learns to invoke Bankai deliberately, making it more usable than his most costly one-time states. The ranking places it above his early Shikai on demonstrated capability, without assigning a numerical multiplier.

  3. Hollow-mask Bankai

When Ichigo adds the Hollow mask to Bankai, he combines his Soul Reaper fighting style with a more forceful and volatile power source. It raises the ceiling of his Bankai-era combat performance and helps distinguish this configuration from Bankai alone.

Control and cost: His ability to use the mask improves over time, but it is not initially a seamless or reliably sustained state. Changes in mask duration and control are stages of development, not separate official form categories.

  4. Fullbring development and restored Soul Reaper power

Ichigo’s Fullbring arc adds another major layer to his combat evolution. His Fullbring develops before his Soul Reaper abilities are restored, and the restored power takes a form that incorporates Fullbring traits. The resulting Fullbring Bankai belongs above his earlier Bankai configurations in this editorial ranking, while the intermediate Fullbring stages are best understood as a progression rather than a set of wholly separate top-tier transformations.

Control and cost: This is a more deliberate combat development than a last-resort sacrifice. Its placement is less certain than the endgame entries because the available official profiles establish the broad heritage and progression, not a form-by-form numerical comparison.

  5. True Shikai after the reforging of Zangetsu

After learning more about his heritage and having his Zanpakuto reforged, Ichigo gains a truer understanding of the powers he carries. His dual blades signal that this is not just an upgrade to the old Shikai; it represents a more complete relationship with the powers previously divided between different aspects of Zangetsu.

Control and cost: The reforged Shikai is a combat configuration Ichigo can wield, rather than a transformation defined by an irreversible sacrifice. Its precise position relative to brief endgame states is an inference from the story, not an official ranking.

  6. Dangai training and Final Getsugatensho

Ichigo’s Dangai training leads to the Final Getsugatensho, an extraordinary peak-power state used against Aizen. Bandai Namco’s licensed BLEACH Rebirth of Souls character profile describes his spiritual pressure as reaching a level that even Hogyoku-fused Aizen cannot sense. That is the game’s official character description, not a published manga power measurement or a declaration that this form outranks every other state.

Control and cost: Its peak is exceptional, but the price is decisive: the same game profile says Ichigo loses all his Soul Reaper power as a result. It is therefore an extreme, temporary expenditure of power, not a sustainable form to compare as though it were ordinary Bankai.

  7. True Bankai with the late-series half-Hollowfied state known as Blood Chain Ichigo

The strongest placement goes to Ichigo’s late-series Bankai configuration in the half-Hollowfied state the official TYBW anime glossary calls Blood Chain Ichigo. The glossary says that in the battle against Yhwach after the Soul King’s absorption, Ichigo manifests power on “a new dimension” in spiritual pressure, physical ability, and reaction speed. It also identifies the state as half-Hollowfied, with changes to his appearance and sword. The page’s qualitative description is strong evidence for an endgame peak, not a universal numerical verdict over every temporary form.

Control and cost: This is an endgame combat state, and the official description emphasizes its heightened abilities rather than a complete account of how long Ichigo can sustain it or what it costs. “Blood Chain” is the official anime glossary’s label; naming can vary among fan communities. The ranking uses the official term without treating alternate fan labels as separate canon forms.

Why the top two are debatable

Final Getsugatensho has an unusually explicit description of overwhelming pressure and an unusually explicit cost: the loss of Ichigo’s Soul Reaper powers. Blood Chain Ichigo, by contrast, is described by the official anime glossary as an endgame state whose spiritual pressure, physical ability, and reaction speed reach a new dimension in the Yhwach battle. Those descriptions support different kinds of comparison. One establishes an extraordinary peak against Aizen; the other establishes a dramatic late-series peak against an opponent empowered by the Soul King.

Neither source supplies a shared measurement, and a character’s performance depends on the opponent and circumstances. That is why the ranking gives the late-series state the top spot for its demonstrated endgame capability, while recognizing Final Getsugatensho as a plausible rival if the comparison focuses narrowly on the most extreme short-lived burst.

Canon forms versus licensed-game descriptions

The story-based progression and the TYBW anime’s character and glossary pages provide the canon context for Ichigo’s origins, heritage, and late-series abilities. Bandai Namco’s Final Getsugatensho profile is an official licensed-game description. It is useful evidence for how the game presents that character, but game mechanics and character copy do not create a manga canon ranking. Bandai Namco’s base Ichigo page likewise identifies a licensed-game portrayal, not a canonical power scale.
