Black Widow movies in release-date order
Release order is slightly different because the solo film arrived after Natasha’s original story had reached its conclusion in Avengers: Endgame:
- Iron Man 2 — May 7, 2010
- The Avengers — May 4, 2012
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier — April 4, 2014
- Avengers: Age of Ultron — 2015
- Captain America: Civil War — 2016
- Avengers: Infinity War — 2018
- Avengers: Endgame — April 26, 2019
- Black Widow — July 9, 2021
Quick release-order version: Iron Man 2 → The Avengers → Captain America: The Winter Soldier → Avengers: Age of Ultron → Captain America: Civil War → Avengers: Infinity War → Avengers: Endgame → Black Widow.
Which order should you choose?
Best for first-time viewers: release order
Choose release order if you are new to the MCU or have not seen these films before. It introduces Natasha as a mysterious S.H.I.E.L.D. operative in Iron Man 2, follows her growing role within the Avengers, and then presents Black Widow as a later look at an earlier chapter of her life.
Watching Black Widow after Endgame also preserves its original context. The film was released in 2021, after audiences had already seen Natasha’s complete Avengers-era arc, so some of its emotional framing and credits material assumes familiarity with what came before.
Best for a chronological rewatch: story order
Choose chronological order if you have already seen the MCU films and want to place each story where it happens in Natasha’s timeline. Putting Black Widow directly after Civil War creates a natural transition: Natasha has split from the Avengers and must confront the Red Room, her family history, and the consequences of her former life.
There is one practical complication. The film’s post-credit sequence connects to the post-Endgame status quo. For a strict chronology, watch the main feature after Civil War but save that sequence until after Endgame. If you prefer convenience, watch the complete film in its chronological slot; the main story’s placement does not change.
Every Black Widow appearance in order
1. Iron Man 2
Release date: May 7, 2010
Natasha Romanoff makes her MCU debut under the cover identity of Natalie Rushman. She is assigned by S.H.I.E.L.D. to evaluate and monitor Tony Stark, but her real role is that of a highly trained undercover operative. The film establishes her combat ability, espionage background, and connection to Nick Fury’s organization.

This is first in both the release list and the simplified Natasha-focused chronology.
2. The Avengers
Release date: May 4, 2012
Natasha becomes one of the central members of the first on-screen Avengers team. Working alongside Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Thor, Bruce Banner, Clint Barton, and Nick Fury, she helps bring the group together during the crisis involving Loki and the Tesseract.
The Avengers is important because it moves Black Widow from a supporting intelligence role into the core superhero ensemble. It also develops her long-standing partnership with Clint Barton.
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Release date: April 4, 2014
This is Natasha’s most substantial role before her solo film. She works with Steve Rogers as they uncover a HYDRA conspiracy embedded inside S.H.I.E.L.D. The story gives her a stronger co-lead position and reveals more about the compromises and secrets associated with her past.

4. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Release year: 2015
Natasha is now an established Avenger. Alongside the team’s battle against Ultron, the film explores her relationships with the other Avengers, particularly Bruce Banner and Clint Barton, and offers additional insight into the person behind her professional identity.
It belongs fourth in both the chronological and release-date lists.
5. Captain America: Civil War
Release year: 2016
The Avengers fracture over government oversight and responsibility after a series of catastrophic events. Natasha initially supports the side seeking formal accountability, but the conflict becomes more complicated as loyalties shift and the team breaks apart.

The only MCU feature centered on Natasha Romanoff follows her while she confronts the Red Room, her former life as a spy and assassin, and the family history she tried to leave behind. It is framed as a spy thriller rather than another conventional Avengers team-up, giving Natasha’s past and personal choices the focus.
Although it is the title most directly associated with the phrase “Black Widow movie,” it is not the beginning of her MCU story. New viewers should normally save it for release order, while returning viewers can place it after Civil War.

Marvel confirmed home-video releases in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital formats. A Black Widow 4K UHD Blu-ray is the most relevant physical-media option for viewers who want the solo film on their shelf; edition, retailer inventory, and regional availability can vary.
7. Avengers: Infinity War
Release year: 2018
After the events of Black Widow, Natasha is again an active member of the Avengers during the fight against Thanos. Her role is tied to the team’s fractured state and its effort to respond to a threat that extends across the universe.
In release order, Infinity War comes before both Endgame and the later-released Black Widow. In story order, it follows the solo film.
8. Avengers: Endgame
Release date: April 26, 2019
Endgame completes Natasha’s original Avengers-era storyline and is the final film in both the simplified chronological list and the theatrical release list, apart from the fact that Black Widow was released later as a story set in the past.
It is essential viewing if your goal is to follow the conclusion of Natasha’s arc rather than only watch the solo film.
For a broader Avengers collection, Marvel has also identified a four-film set containing The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. That collection does not include every film in Natasha’s eight-film run, so treat it as an optional supplement rather than a complete Black Widow set.

Do you need to watch the other MCU films?
No. The eight films above provide a focused Natasha Romanoff watch-through. You do not need to watch every MCU film to understand the basic progression of her story.
For the clearest experience, watch at least Captain America: Civil War before Black Widow, since the solo film begins in the aftermath of Natasha’s break with the Avengers. Watching Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame afterward completes the surrounding Avengers storyline.
Where can you watch the Black Widow movies?
Streaming rights change by country, service, and date. Marvel previously announced Black Widow for Disney+ subscribers and also confirmed Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD releases, but that historical announcement is not enough to guarantee current availability in the United States or any other particular region.
Before publication or viewing, check the current catalog for your country through the relevant streaming or rental services. If you want a more stable option for the standalone film, physical editions such as 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD avoid the problem of a title moving between services, although stock and editions can change.
Final watch-order recommendation
Watching Natasha’s story for the first time? Use release order: Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and finally Black Widow.
Rewatching the MCU chronologically? Move Black Widow to the space between Civil War and Infinity War. Save its post-credit scene until after Endgame if you want the strictest possible timeline.
