Its planned July 2025 release did not happen as announced. In April 2026, Sharon Osbourne said the original members had regained ownership of the demos; in July, Tony Iommi said they would come out “at some point,” but gave no release date.
What are the Earth demos?
Former manager Jim Simpson, founder of Big Bear Music, announced Earth: The Legendary Lost Tapes in June 2025. He described the recordings as material the band made at Zella Studio in Birmingham in 1969, during its Earth period, before it became known as Black Sabbath. Contemporary coverage said the album was planned for release through Big Bear Records on July 25, 2025. That release did not materialize as promised.

Simpson called the material remastered early recordings and said the band had held them back while its style was evolving. The provenance and remastering process have not been independently established in the available reporting. In announcing the set, Simpson said: “These recordings clearly demonstrate what fine music they produced right from the very beginning. We recorded these tracks at Zella Studio in Birmingham in 1969, but held back from releasing them as their style was evolving so quickly.” (Louder, June 2025)
Simpson also described the recordings as gaining importance “some 57 years later.” That figure was part of his 2025 statement, not an independently verified measurement. (Louder, June 2025)

Why didn’t the planned 2025 release happen?
In a report published in April 2026, Sharon Osbourne said the band had not wanted the recordings released and had threatened legal action. She said the dispute with Simpson was settled and ownership of the demos returned to the original members: “We settled with Jim Simpson and the band now have their demos back. And all four of them [the original Black Sabbath members] own it, which is where it should be. All of that stuff should be theirs. So it all ended well.” (Louder, April 2026)
Osbourne said the members would discuss what to do with the recordings. Her statement establishes the reported settlement and return of ownership; it does not announce an approved edition, label, or release schedule.
Will The Legendary Lost Tapes be released?
There is no confirmed release date. On July 29, 2026, Tony Iommi said the demos “will come out at some point,” without specifying when or how. He also reflected on hearing the old material: “It’s weird when you hear stuff from so long ago, and all these things crop up that you forgot about.” (Louder, July 2026)
Iommi’s comment makes a future release possible, but it is not a dated release announcement. The reporting available as of that update does not establish an authorized edition or a current place to buy it.

What tracks and formats were listed?
Jumbo Records’ listing describes LP and digipack CD formats and names nine tracks. The CD is shown at £15.99 with a January 30, 2026 release date, but the listing marks it out of stock. Those are retailer-page details, not confirmation that the album was released or remains available. (Jumbo Records)
- “Blue Suede Shoes”
- “Evenin’”
- “Wee Wee Baby”
- “Untitled”
- “Free Man”
- “Song For Jim (Guitar Version)”
- “Song For Jim (Flute Version)”
- “Wicked World”
- “Warning”
The retailer’s nine-track listing differs from the April 2026 report, which describes the originally proposed set as eight songs and mentions one “Song For Jim.” The accounts do not explain the discrepancy, so the retailer’s track list should not be treated as a confirmed final configuration.
