Black Phone 2 is already released. The sequel opened in U.S. theaters on October 17, 2025, became available to buy or rent digitally on November 4, 2025, and arrived on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 23, 2025. Universal currently lists the film as a home-viewing title rather than an upcoming release.
Directed by Scott Derrickson, the film brings back Ethan Hawke as the Grabber, Mason Thames as Finn Shaw, and Madeleine McGraw as Gwen Shaw. Set four years after the first movie, it moves the story from a basement kidnapping into a snowbound Colorado church camp, where Gwen’s visions reveal a much larger supernatural history.

How to watch Black Phone 2 at home
Viewers have two confirmed home-entertainment routes: rent or buy the film digitally, or purchase a physical edition. The digital option is the simplest choice if you want to watch immediately without a disc player. A physical copy is more useful if you want long-term access, bonus features, or a copy that is not dependent on a particular digital storefront.
Physical editions
- Black Phone 2 Blu-ray editions offer a standard high-definition physical option and include digital access where specified by the release.
- Black Phone 2 4K UHD editions are aimed at viewers with a compatible 4K player and display. A 4K disc is not required to watch the film; it is a premium picture-and-collection format.
- Black Phone 2 DVD is the lower-complexity option for viewers who use a standard DVD player.
- The Black Phone 2 two-movie collection combines the sequel with the original film, with collection configurations available in both 4K and DVD formats according to Universal’s current home-media listing.
The physical release includes substantial bonus material. Depending on the participating retailer and edition, the package includes seven deleted scenes, cast and filmmaking featurettes, and a commentary from director, co-writer, and producer Scott Derrickson. Check the package details for the specific edition before buying because bonus content and included digital codes can vary by format or retailer.
Universal’s home-release page lists the disc feature runtime as 1:53:13. Its consumer-facing listing rounds that figure to 1 hour and 54 minutes; both refer to the same feature rather than two different cuts.

Black Phone 2 cast
The sequel retains the main performers who established the original film’s family-and-killer conflict:
- Ethan Hawke as the Grabber
- Mason Thames as Finn Shaw
- Madeleine McGraw as Gwen Shaw
- Jeremy Davies as Terrence Shaw, Finn and Gwen’s father
- Miguel Mora, returning from the first film
The additional ensemble includes Demián Bichir, Arianna Rivas, Anna Lore, Graham Abbey, and Maev Beaty. Universal’s current consumer listing uses the spelling “Madeleine McGraw.” One home-release passage contains the variant “Madeline,” but the current consumer page and broader official listing support “Madeleine.”
The central dynamic has changed since the first film. Finn remains important, but the sequel places considerably more emphasis on Gwen, her psychic visions, and the connection between those visions and the Grabber’s earlier victims.

Scott Derrickson returns as director. Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are credited as writers, with Derrickson also serving as a producer and Cargill as co-producer. Joe Hill, whose short story “The Black Phone” provided the source material for the first film, is credited as co-writer and executive producer on the sequel. Jason Blum is among the producers.

This is not an adaptation of a separately published “Black Phone 2” story. The sequel expands the mythology introduced by Hill’s short story and the first film, moving the conflict into a new setting and broadening the supernatural rules around the Grabber and his victims. Universal’s official home-release materials describe that setting as a deserted, snowbound church camp in the Colorado mountains.
Story and premise: spoiler-light overview
Black Phone 2 is set in 1982, four years after the events of the original. Finn is now 17, while Gwen is 15 and continues to experience psychic visions. Although the Grabber is dead, his presence has not ended. He begins tormenting the siblings from beyond the grave, turning the sequel into a supernatural continuation rather than another ordinary kidnapping thriller.
The story leads Finn and Gwen to a Christian winter camp in the Rocky Mountains. A severe snowstorm isolates the location, and Gwen’s visions connect the camp to three boys who were murdered there by the Grabber decades earlier. The siblings must investigate what happened at the camp while trying to survive a haunting that is both psychological and physical.
That premise gives the sequel a different shape from the first film. The original centered on Finn’s captivity and the mysterious black telephone that allowed him to communicate with dead victims. The sequel expands the investigation outward: the siblings are dealing with a place, a buried history, and a supernatural force that has become more powerful after death.
Black Phone 2 ending and story explained
The Grabber’s power is connected to his first victims
Spoiler: The film reveals that the Grabber’s supernatural influence is tied to the spirits of three boys he murdered at the camp. Gwen and Finn discover that the boys’ bodies are beneath a frozen lake. Recovering the bodies and giving the victims a proper burial becomes essential to weakening the Grabber’s hold.
This changes the siblings’ objective. They are not merely trying to escape a haunting or defeat the killer in a direct confrontation. They must uncover the original crimes, locate the dead, and correct the condition that allows the Grabber’s influence to continue. The dead boys are therefore not just apparitions or clues; they are central to the mechanics of the conflict.
The revelation about the siblings’ mother
Spoiler: Finn and Gwen had believed that their mother died by suicide. The sequel reveals that the Grabber killed her after she discovered his murderous secret through her own psychic abilities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe revelation links the family tragedy directly to the larger supernatural mythology. Gwen’s visions are not an isolated storytelling device: they echo an ability her mother also possessed, and they explain why Gwen is able to perceive the camp’s history and the danger facing her family. The sequel consequently makes the Shaw family’s past as important as the Grabber’s crimes.
The frozen Hell imagery
The sequel also develops a visual and mythological idea of an icy or frozen Hell. In discussion of the film’s conception, Derrickson connected the idea to Dante’s Inferno, particularly the frozen ninth circle, rather than treating Hell as exclusively fiery.
That choice fits the film’s snowbound setting. The frozen lake, mountain storm, and isolated camp are not simply atmospheric details; they reinforce the sequel’s central ideas about imprisonment, buried violence, and a past that has been locked away but not resolved. The result is a supernatural world that feels colder and more expansive than the basement-centered horror of the first film.

How the sequel differs from the first film
| The Black Phone | Black Phone 2 |
|---|---|
| Primarily follows Finn’s abduction and captivity. | Gives Gwen’s visions and perspective a much larger role. |
| Uses the basement and black telephone as the main horror framework. | Expands the mythology to a snowbound church camp and frozen lake. |
| Focuses on surviving the Grabber’s immediate physical threat. | Combines survival with investigating old murders and laying the dead to rest. |
| Introduces the siblings’ supernatural connection to the dead. | Explains more about that connection and the family’s hidden history. |
The sequel is therefore best understood as a mythology expansion. It returns to the same characters and antagonist but does not simply repeat the first film’s captivity setup. The family story, the three murdered boys, and Gwen’s psychic ability become the organizing elements of the new chapter.
Rating, genre, and runtime
Universal classifies Black Phone 2 as horror, thriller, and suspense. In the United States, it is rated R for strong violent content, gore, teen drug use, and language. Parents and viewers who found the first film intense should treat the rating as a warning that the sequel contains similarly mature material.
The official consumer runtime is listed as 1 hour and 54 minutes, while the home-release technical specification gives the precise feature length as 1:53:13.

Black Phone 2 opened in first place in North America with an estimated $26.5 million domestic opening weekend. The Associated Press reported an additional estimated $15.5 million from 71 international territories, for an estimated worldwide launch of approximately $42 million against a reported $30 million production budget. See the Associated Press report for that opening context.
For comparison, AP reported that the first The Black Phone finished with more than $161 million worldwide against an $18 million budget. Those are different types of figures: the sequel numbers describe its opening launch, while the original’s figure is a reported lifetime worldwide total. They should not be presented as a final lifetime gross for Black Phone 2.
The sequel’s release and home-media availability establish it as a completed 2025 film. They do not, by themselves, confirm plans for a third installment, so there is no supported release-date announcement for Black Phone 3 to report here.
