Charlie Brooker describes the abrupt reversal as “a joke ending” that should feel “slightly absurd,” not as a realistic or uncomplicated victory.
What happens at the end of “Bête Noire”?
Maria’s reality has been steadily destabilized since Verity, a former schoolmate, joined a focus group for Maria’s miso-flavored Hucklebuck candy bar and then appeared at her workplace. As small disagreements multiply, Maria’s colleagues come to believe she drank almond milk despite her serious nut allergy.
When Maria confronts Verity at home, Verity uses her necklace to summon police. The officers believe Verity’s version of events: that Maria broke in and threatened her with a knife. While being handcuffed, Maria takes an officer’s gun and kills Verity. She then takes the necklace and commands a reality in which she is empress of the universe. Netflix’s official ending explainer recounts the finale and Brooker’s comments on it.
How does the necklace work in the episode?
Verity describes the necklace as a remote connected to servers she built. It does not, in her explanation, change the current reality directly. Instead, it tunes its user to a parallel reality in which a spoken statement has always been true: “Technically, it’s not really changing anything,” she says. “It just retunes our corporeal frequency to one of the parallel realities where whatever I’ve said has always been true.”

That is the episode’s fictional mechanism, not a real-world technology claim. It also clarifies the finale’s logic: Maria uses Verity’s device to select a reality matching her command.
What did Charlie Brooker say the ending means?
Brooker’s explanation emphasizes the sudden, comic reversal. Maria seems to have lost everything, then turns the tool behind Verity’s manipulation against the situation that has trapped her. Brooker said: “It’s fun to make it look like [Maria’s] absolutely lost everything in the last few moments and then have her triumphantly, phoenix-from-the-flame style, use this device to get out of the problem she’s in. It’s kind of a joke ending, but hopefully it’s slightly absurd.”

That intent matters: the empress image is deliberately heightened, but Maria has just killed Verity. The finale is not presented by Brooker as a straightforward moral triumph. One possible reading is that Maria adopts the same reality-control tool that enabled Verity’s gaslighting; that is an interpretation of the reversal, rather than a claim Brooker makes about its meaning.
Why Maria’s final look changed
The script originally put Maria in what Brooker called “almost fascist gear.” The filmed version instead gives her a pop-star look. Brooker described the result as “more Game of Thrones” and “a little bit Beyoncé meets Khaleesi,” a visual shift that supports the finale’s flamboyant, absurd tone.

Why does Verity target Maria?
Netflix’s explainer says Maria started a school rumor that Verity had an affair with a teacher, leading to Verity being bullied. The two women do not remember or describe the harm in the same way. Siena Kelly said Maria “doesn’t admit that that’s what happened, and she doesn’t explicitly apologize or explain”; Kelly was drawn to the idea that people can have “different truths” and memories.
Verity’s revenge is also bound up with her inability to move on. She has tried to find happiness in other realities, including one in which she marries Harry Styles and another in which she is empress, but remains dissatisfied. Rosy McEwen called Verity’s inability to let go “kind of heartbreaking.” Brooker compared her with Robert Daly from “USS Callister”: both are powerful, troubled people, he said, but their pain does not justify their actions.

Verity had targeted Natalie, Maria’s friend and another former bully, before turning to Maria. The explainer says Natalie died by suicide after a nervous breakdown and weeks of paranoia and accusations following Verity’s gaslighting. This is Natalie’s fictional fate in the episode; it should not be taken as a general claim about real people or mental illness.

“Bête noire” means something a person detests or finds especially irritating. Netflix Tudum describes the Season 7 episode as a workplace dark comedy and “a parable on gaslighting.” Brooker said it was once titled “Ring of Truth,” when Verity’s device was a ring rather than a pendant; he rejected that title as too obvious and prefers titles that retain some mystery.
