Spoilers for “Bête Noire,” Season 7, Episode 2. Verity uses her necklace to make reality conform to statements she has made, then turns that power against Maria. After Verity frames her with the police, Maria kills her, takes the device and commands a new reality in which she is empress of the universe. The episode’s last turn is a deliberately absurd reversal, not a straightforward escape from consequences.
How does “Bête Noire” end?
At Verity’s home, Maria is confronted by police who believe she broke in and threatened Verity with a knife. Verity has used the necklace to make that version of events the one the officers accept. As Maria is being handcuffed, she grabs an officer’s gun and kills Verity.

Maria then takes the necklace and gives it a command: make her empress of the universe. The immediate reversal is that Maria takes control of the same reality-altering tool Verity used to dismantle her life. Charlie Brooker, the episode’s creator and executive producer, called the ending “kind of a joke ending, but hopefully it’s slightly absurd” in Netflix Tudum’s April 10, 2025 explainer. He said an earlier version had Maria in “almost fascist gear”; the finished look, he joked, was “a little bit Beyoncé meets Khaleesi.”
How does Verity’s necklace work?
The necklace is a remote connected to servers Verity built. In the episode’s fictional explanation, it retunes a person’s corporeal frequency to a parallel reality where what that person said has always been true. It is not presented as a real scientific mechanism; within the story, it lets Verity shift reality so that other people’s memories and the evidence around Maria appear to confirm Verity’s version.

#1 Best Overall
Verity begins with destabilizing discrepancies: whether a snack brand is called Barnies or Bernies, and whether a recipe included a particular ingredient. The changes grow more serious. Colleagues fail to acknowledge Maria’s severe nut allergy, and video appears to show Maria drinking almond milk. By the time the police arrive, a minor argument over details has become a criminal frame-up.
Why does Verity target Maria?
Verity blames Maria for a school rumor that she had an affair with a teacher. The rumor led to relentless bullying. Maria does not remember or acknowledge the event in the same way Verity does, leaving the episode with a conflict between two accounts rather than a cleanly settled memory. Siena Kelly, who plays Maria, described it as “two people who have different truths, and there are different memories of it” in the Tudum explainer.
That history gives Verity’s fixation a motive, but it does not make the harm she inflicts justified. Brooker compared Verity to Robert Daly from “USS Callister,” saying, “They are people who are in pain, but that isn’t justifying what they’re doing.” Rosy McEwen, who plays Verity, called her inability to move on “kind of heartbreaking.”
What happened to Natalie?
Verity had targeted Natalie, another bully and Maria’s friend, before she turned on Maria. A call with Natalie’s husband reveals that Natalie died by suicide after a nervous breakdown and weeks of paranoia and accusations following Verity’s gaslighting. That is the episode’s plot account of Natalie’s fate, not evidence about gaslighting or suicide outside the fiction.

What does “bête noire” mean?
“Bête noire” means something a person detests or finds extremely annoying. The episode nods to the phrase when Gabe introduces Maria to their boss as the “chief wizard” of “Chili Flake Bête Noire fame.” Brooker said an earlier title was “Ring of Truth,” back when the device was a ring rather than a pendant, but he found it too on the nose and preferred a title that felt more mysterious.

Maria appears to escape the immediate reality of her arrest by seizing Verity’s power, but her empress command is not a conventional happy ending. It is an absurd final escalation: after being stripped of control, Maria uses the device to impose a reality of her own. The episode’s contrast between Verity’s grievance and her cruelty remains intact, as does the uncertainty around how Maria and Verity remember the original rumor.
