Trent Clark accidentally killed Ambassador Chen during an argument, then ordered the murders of Jason, Maggie, and Phillip to conceal what happened. Jason was an MI5 agent investigating Helen over suspected leaks. In the finale, Sam kills Trent and Alex, while Helen chooses to throw away the hard drive that could have revealed more about Jason.
Who killed Ambassador Chen—and who ordered Jason’s murder?
Trent Clark accidentally killed Ambassador Chen during a heated argument. He then ordered the hits on Jason, Maggie, and Phillip to cover up Chen’s death. The finale’s chain of events is straightforward: an accidental killing leads Trent to try to suppress the truth by eliminating people connected to it.
The finished series identifies Trent as Chen’s killer. Creator Joe Barton told Netflix Tudum that an earlier version of the story assigned the murder to Perryman, an Irish MI5 agent, but that reveal was filmed and ultimately discarded. Perryman is not the answer given by the aired finale. Netflix Tudum’s finale explainer was published December 4, 2025.
Who was Jason really?
Jason was an MI5 agent assigned to investigate Helen because of concerns she might be leaking government secrets. His role reframes their relationship: the romance and the investigation existed at the same time. But the show does not disclose the full contents of Jason’s file, so details beyond his MI5 work and assignment remain unknown.

Why does Helen throw away the hard drive?
Reed gives Helen a hard drive containing information about Jason. Helen throws it into the Thames without opening it, choosing not to learn more about the man she loved.
Joe Barton leaves Helen’s reasoning open to interpretation. His own reading is that she already knows what matters to her: Jason loved her and saved her. As he put it, “What was in his heart, ultimately, was the one thing that she knew was real, so that act of saving her was real, and that’s all she needed.” That is Barton’s interpretation of her choice, not an additional fact revealed by the file.

What does Sam’s decision mean?
Helen has Trent at gunpoint, but Sam shoots Trent and kills Alex as well. Barton says Sam acts out of love and loyalty, partly to spare Helen the burden of killing Trent. He also complicates the moral picture of Trent, describing him as “a gentle soul who’s made a terrible mistake”; that is the creator’s characterization, not an excuse for Trent’s actions.
Sam’s choice costs him the possibility of a life with Michael. After killing the Clarks, Sam sees himself as too dangerous to be with him. Barton says Michael is effectively no longer an option for Sam.

Where do the other characters end up?
- Helen and Wallace: They remain together and celebrate Christmas with their children. Barton describes them as accepting each other more, despite the secrets between them.
- Eleanor, Williams, and Kai-Ming: They survive and spend Christmas together in what Barton calls a found-family ending.
- Marie: The Webbs’ nanny is revealed as a Black Dove spy working for Reed, like Wallace’s colleague Dani.
- Lenny: Sam does not kill her. An earlier script did, but the series kept her alive.
- Helen and Reed: Their relationship remains uneasy. Barton says Reed cares for Helen but could have her taken out if necessary.
