Spoilers for the Black Clover manga through its final chapter. Among the characters in this ranking, Mereoleona Vermillion has the strongest case for the top spot: her official profile says she is stronger than her brother Fuegoleon in battle, and her Mana Skin and Mana Zone underpin her formidable combat style. This is an editorial ranking, not an official franchise list. It compares demonstrated combat effectiveness—offense, defense, versatility, results, and limitations—not magical power alone.
The official anime roster names eight squad captains, while Mereoleona is listed separately despite taking the Crimson Lion role in the story. To make ten entries without silently treating every powerful mage as a captain, this ranking includes those eight rostered captains and Mereoleona, who has served as captain, plus Julius Novachrono under an explicit former-captain rule. Julius is not a squad captain on the reviewed profile, and Wizard King status alone does not establish a place here.
How this ranking works
The cutoff is the manga’s completed run, which the official franchise site says was serialized from February 2015 to May 2026. Late-manga forms and battles count even where anime profiles or roster pages reflect earlier status. No official source publishes a top-ten strength order, so placements below are comparative judgments based on the characters’ strongest demonstrated combat forms, opponent quality and outcomes, finishing ability, defense, mobility, versatility, and constraints such as duration or reliance on allies.
A higher place does not mean a guaranteed win against every lower-ranked character. Magic matchups, battlefield conditions, and preparation can change a result. The official anime roster supplies eight names; the additional entries follow the story-based inclusion rule above. Julius is ranked as a former squad captain, not because the title of Wizard King automatically makes him a captain.

The 10 strongest Magic Knight captains, ranked
1. Mereoleona Vermillion
Mereoleona’s case rests on direct combat comparisons as well as her own battlefield performance. Her official character profile states, “It is said in a battle, she is stronger than her brother Fuegoleon,” and identifies her Mana Skin and Mana Zone. That is a profile statement, not an official ranking of all captains, but it directly supports placing her above Fuegoleon. Her aggressive close-range style and ability to fight in hostile conditions make her especially dangerous when she can keep pressure on an opponent.
Her place is not a claim that she is invulnerable or that one profile line settles every matchup. Rather, she combines a stated advantage over another elite captain with unusually forceful combat capabilities. She has served as Crimson Lion captain after Fuegoleon is gravely injured, although the anime roster page lists her separately from its captain roster.
2. Julius Novachrono
Julius is included under the former-captain rule: he led the Grey Deer before becoming Wizard King. His Time Magic gives him exceptional control over the pace and terms of a fight, and his official profile describes him as “A great mage who stands at the top of all of the Magic Knights.” That is a broad profile description, not a measured combat ranking or proof that he is a current squad captain.
Julius ranks below Mereoleona here because the comparison is about demonstrated combat effectiveness at the manga cutoff, not status or reputation alone. His profile wording signals extraordinary standing, but it does not by itself establish that he outperforms every combatant in the list.

Yami’s Dark Magic gives him a strong offensive threat against powerful opponents, and his ability to read and adapt in battle makes him more than a high-output attacker. His strongest showings include fighting through pressure and creating openings for decisive attacks. His limits matter, too: some of his most effective results come in high-stakes team fights, and his physical condition and the demands of his techniques can constrain how long he sustains peak performance.
4. Nozel Silva
Nozel’s Mercury Magic offers both flexible offense and defense: he can reshape attacks, shield himself, and threaten opponents from multiple angles. His control and composure help him respond to varied techniques rather than relying on a single combat pattern. He ranks below the top three because the strongest comparative evidence for those characters points to broader or more decisive combat impact, while Nozel’s standing depends more heavily on his ability to control a favorable exchange.

5. Fuegoleon Vermillion
Fuegoleon is an accomplished captain whose Flame Magic becomes substantially more dangerous with Salamander. He brings reach, destructive power, and the judgment to deploy force strategically. The most direct comparison available cuts against placing him above Mereoleona: her official profile says she is stronger than him in battle. That does not make Fuegoleon weak; it makes second place between the siblings difficult to defend when the ranking is explicitly about combat effectiveness.
6. William Vangeance
William’s World Tree Magic has unusual reach and battlefield value, making him a major asset when a fight involves multiple allies or a broad area. His magic can support allies and reshape the conditions of engagement rather than merely dealing damage. That versatility earns him a place among the strongest, though a support-oriented ability and fewer clear one-on-one finishing demonstrations make his exact position harder to pin down than those of the more direct duelists.
7. Charlotte Roselei
Charlotte’s Briar Magic combines restraint, defense, and control, giving her options beyond a straightforward attack. Her ability to adjust her magic to counter a particular threat demonstrates tactical value, especially when she has time to understand an opponent’s technique. That matchup-sensitive strength is also a qualification: her best results can depend on having the right opening or counter, rather than overwhelming every opponent through raw force.
8. Jack the Ripper
Jack’s Severing Magic is built to cut through defenses and adapt its cutting properties to what stands in its way. That makes him an unusually threatening attacker against durable opponents. His style is less balanced than those ranked above him: he is most dangerous when he can continue pressing the attack, and his narrower focus offers fewer answers when an opponent controls distance or the battlefield.
9. Rill Boismortier
Rill’s Painting Magic is highly adaptable. He can create a range of effects and contribute offense, defense, or support depending on what a battle requires. That breadth makes him difficult to assess by a single headline feat; flexibility is a major strength, but it does not always translate into the same immediate finishing threat as the captains ranked higher. His placement reflects the gap between broad potential and consistently decisive combat evidence.
10. Dorothy Unsworth
Dorothy’s Dream Magic can impose a powerful change of battlefield by drawing opponents into Glamour World. That kind of control can turn a fight sharply in her favor, particularly if she catches an opponent without a counter. But its strength is highly dependent on the situation and on whether she can establish that advantage. Compared with the others on this list, her available combat evidence gives less basis for a higher overall placement.
Why Kaiser Granvorka is not ranked
Kaiser is one of the eight characters named in the official anime captain roster, so omitting him from a ten-person list requires explanation. His Vortex Magic is designed for defense and protection, but the evidence summarized here does not establish a comparable top-tier offensive record or enough late-manga combat results to place him above the ten selected entries. This is an evidence-based ranking, not a judgment that a defensive captain has no value.
What the official sources establish
The official anime roster lists Nozel Silva, Fuegoleon Vermillion, William Vangeance, Charlotte Roselei, Jack the Ripper, Rill Boismortier, Dorothy Unsworth, and Kaiser Granvorka under “Magic Knights Captain.” It lists Mereoleona separately as a Magic Knight. Her English character profile says she takes over as Crimson Lion captain after Fuegoleon is gravely injured, so the difference reflects status and the time represented by those pages, not a reason to exclude her from a manga-informed ranking.
The official Mereoleona profile provides a direct battle comparison with Fuegoleon, but neither it nor the roster is an authoritative top-ten list. The official Julius profile’s description of him as standing at the top of the Magic Knights likewise does not turn that wording into a calibrated ranking against every captain.
The official franchise site describes Black Clover as running in Weekly Shonen Jump and Jump GIGA from February 2015 to May 2026 and reports more than 25 million copies sold; it does not give a separate date for that sales tally. Shonen Jump+ marks the manga complete and lists chapter 386, dated August 26, 2026, as well as Volume 38. Those details establish publication context, not combat strength. Readers who want to check the late-series material can consult the manga listing, rather than treating a character profile as a substitute for the battles themselves.
