Binny and Family is a 2024 Hindi family drama about an 18-year-old in London whose independence clashes with her traditional grandparents visiting from Bihar. Its appeal lies in the performances and everyday family tensions; whether that warmth is enough depends on how much patience you have for a story critics have often found predictable.
What is Binny and Family about?
Directed by Ssanjay Tripaathy, the film follows Binny, who lives with her parents in London. When her paternal grandparents arrive from Bihar, differences over privacy, behavior and family expectations bring the generations into conflict. Her parents are caught between the older relatives’ traditions and their daughter’s wish to make her own choices.
The premise is not simply that young people are right and older people are wrong. In its review, India Today describes the film as asking whether younger family members can be candid about their lives while helping older relatives adjust. That push and pull gives the family story its most grounded material.
Does the familiar story work?
That is the main point of disagreement among reviewers. Nandini Ramnath’s Scroll.in review finds the observations banal and the plot predictable, though it credits sincere performances and a restrained tone with saving the film from heavier melodrama. The Hindu review excerpt reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes is more receptive to the familiar approach: it praises relatable conversations and performances while noting the lack of major surprises or twists.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
India Today also praises the central family relationship, Anjini Dhawan’s debut and Pankaj Kapur, but criticizes stereotypes and an overstretched plot. The Indian Express review is more sharply negative, calling the film predictable and constrained by sitcom-like beats; it rates it 2 out of 5.
These responses point to the film’s trade-off: familiar family scenes can feel accessible and warm, but the same predictability may make the story seem stretched. If you want a nuanced, surprising take on generational conflict, the reviews suggest this may not be it. If you are comfortable with a conventional family drama and value its cast and low-key approach, its familiar rhythms may be part of the appeal.

How does it handle the family’s different generations?
The grandparents’ expectations and Binny’s desire for privacy drive the visible conflict, but the parents’ position between Indian family expectations and British realities adds another layer. Ramnath’s reading in Scroll.in finds that balancing act more engaging than some of the teen-romance material. It is a useful distinction: the story’s strongest tension may lie less in a simple clash between youth and age than in the compromises demanded of the adults in between.
Whether the emotional themes feel earned is a matter of response rather than an objective fact. Reviewers who value the performances and relatable conversations find warmth in the film; those less persuaded emphasize its familiar beats, stereotypes or stretched plotting. The reviews do not agree on how well the drama turns its themes into a satisfying story.
