Billy Preston: That’s the Way God Planned It is a 105-minute documentary about a musician whose career was much bigger than his public profile. Directed by Paris Barclay, it uses performance footage, studio outtakes, photographs and testimony to trace Preston’s six-decade musical life alongside the painful conflicts he faced around faith, sexuality, abuse and acceptance. Its central tension is whether the film can hold that exuberant music and personal cost together without reducing one to an explanation for the other.

What the film is about

Barclay’s documentary follows Preston from an extraordinary childhood start to his work as a solo artist and collaborator. The film’s official description says he backed Mahalia Jackson at age five and later toured with Little Richard, meeting the Beatles in Hamburg. The Beatles’ official announcement confirms his close musical association with the band during the Let It Be era: he played and recorded with them and was the only musician to receive an on-label credit on a Beatles single. That history makes the film’s implicit question compelling: why didn’t Billy Preston become a bigger star, and who was he as an artist? The documentary sets out to make his contributions legible beyond the famous names around him.

Preston’s music is the film’s strongest draw

The official film materials describe a sound that moved across gospel, rock, soul and pop. They name “Outa-Space,” “Will It Go Round in Circles,” “Nothing from Nothing” and “You Are So Beautiful” among Preston’s No. 1 hits. He was not only a gifted collaborator: the documentary also presents him as a magnetic performer and solo artist in his own right. (Official film site)

That's The Way God Planned It[Purple LP]
  • Billy Preston's fourth studio record, That's The Way God Planned It, came out in August 1969 on Apple Records

The archival material is the clearest reason to watch. The film advertises rare photographs, studio outtakes and performance footage, and the GRAMMY Museum describes a mix of performances and testimony from people who knew Preston. Paris Barclay has singled out the Concert for Bangladesh performance of the title song as the film’s opening: Preston dances and plays organ alongside an all-star lineup. The footage offers a vivid way to see his showmanship, not just hear others describe it. (GRAMMY Museum; Official film site; Rock Cellar interview with Barclay)

A life shaped by music, faith and conflict

The documentary links Preston’s musical identity to the Black church while exploring how his sexuality and search for love and acceptance sat alongside that relationship. It also addresses abuse and other painful personal struggles. These are subjects the film frames through its biography and testimony; they should not be treated as a complete explanation of Preston’s artistry or reduced to a single narrative of suffering. Encouraging Words[Gold LP]
  • Billy Preston's fifth studio album, Encouraging Words, was released in September 1970 through Apple Records

The critical challenge is balance. The film has to give the music space to be joyful and technically impressive while acknowledging the cost of the life Preston lived. Its title gestures toward that unresolved tension rather than offering a neat answer.

Why the title matters

That’s the Way God Planned It was also the title of Preston’s 1969 Apple Records album, produced by George Harrison. The official film description identifies its title single as Preston’s first hit single. In a Rock Cellar interview, Barclay said the title became “a really chilling and open question” for viewers to resolve. That framing invites reflection without pretending the film can settle the contradictions in Preston’s life. (Official film site; Rock Cellar interview with Barclay; The Beatles)

For listeners who want to hear the record behind the title, the 1969 album is a relevant companion. It is a separate release, not the documentary’s soundtrack. (AllMusic album listing)
