That plan was later superseded: on May 23, his official site announced that he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and that scheduled concerts were cancelled.
What Billy Joel announced on March 11, 2025
Joel’s official notice said he needed time to recover from recent surgery and undergo physical therapy under his doctors’ supervision. It postponed his tour for four months and named July 5, 2025, in Pittsburgh as the planned restart date. The notice did not identify the surgery or explain why it was performed. Joel said: “While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first. I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding.”
How the plan changed
The July return date was a postponement plan, not the final outcome. On May 23, 2025, Joel’s official site announced that he had been diagnosed with NPH, cited hearing, vision and balance problems, and said he should refrain from performing while recovering. It cancelled scheduled concerts rather than simply moving them to new dates. Joel wrote: “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.” Billy Joel’s May 23 announcement
| Announcement | Concert status | Ticket handling |
|---|---|---|
| March 11, 2025 | Postponed for four months; Pittsburgh on July 5 was the planned restart. | Purchased tickets were to remain valid for rescheduled shows. |
| May 23, 2025 | Scheduled concerts cancelled following the NPH diagnosis. | Refunds were to be issued automatically to the original payment method. |
What happened to tickets?
Under the March plan, tickets already purchased were to be valid for the rescheduled dates. After the May cancellation announcement, the official notice said refunds would be returned automatically to the original payment method. If a ticket had been transferred, the refund went to the original purchaser. Ticket holders should use the official notice or their ticket provider for any account-specific questions. Was the March surgery for NPH?
That connection has not been established. The March notice did not name the operation or its medical indication. The Associated Press reported in May and again in July that it was unclear whether the health issues behind the March postponement were related to the later NPH diagnosis. It would therefore be inaccurate to say the surgery was for NPH or that the diagnosis caused the surgery.

What Joel said about his health afterward
In interviews reported by the Associated Press in July 2025, Joel said, “I know a lot of people are worried about me and my health, but I’m OK,” and said he was doing his best to work with the condition and recover. He also said the health issues were not “fixed” and were still being worked on. These were comments in interviews, not a new official medical prognosis. Associated Press report, July 2025
