Which tattoos has Billie Eilish explained?
In her fifth-year Time Capsule interview with Vanity Fair, Eilish described three tattoos she had at that time: “Eilish,” a dragon, and fairies. That was a dated account, not a current inventory. The interview establishes what she called or connected to those designs, but it does not give a symbolic explanation for every tattoo.
The fairy tattoos: from Fairyopolis
Eilish said the fairies came from “a book that I had growing up,” naming it as Fairyopolis. She described the figures as “my little guardian angel fairies.” That is the clearest meaning she has given in the cited sources: a childhood-book connection and her own protective description. Coverage places the trio on her hand or wrist; it does not establish a separate meaning for each fairy or link them to a particular passage in the book. The Evening Standard also describes the fairy tattoo.
The “Eilish” tattoo on her chest
In the same interview, Eilish identified a tattoo that “says Eilish.” Teen Vogue later described it as being on her sternum and reported that a friend’s 2023 Instagram photo showed it. Eilish’s quoted words identify the lettering, but do not explain why she chose it.

The dragon: “big boy”
Eilish called her dragon tattoo “big boy” in the Vanity Fair interview. British Vogue showed part of the design around her right hip in its May 2021 cover feature; later coverage describes it extending across her hip and thigh. “Big boy” is her nickname for the tattoo, not a stated explanation of what the dragon represents. The interview does not establish why she chose it.
What later reporting has shown—and what remains unknown
Abstract back tattoo
In October 2023, Eilish revealed a large black design running down her spine toward her lower back in an Instagram photo dump. Allure described lines and shapes; The Evening Standard described swirls and scratch-like patterns and identified tattoo artist Matias Milan. Neither report provides a confirmed personal explanation from Eilish, so the design’s meaning is unknown in these sources.

Possible “Hard” lettering near the dragon
A partial view discussed by Teen Vogue in December 2023 appeared to show the cursive word “Hard” near the dragon. The image did not establish whether that was the complete wording or part of a longer design. Eilish’s explanation is not reported, so “Hard and Soft” should not be treated as a confirmed full phrase or interpretation.
Lower-stomach tattoo
In July 2024, Teen Vogue reported that a lower-stomach tattoo was visible in an Instagram photo dump. The article did not identify its design or report a meaning. Its coverage also showed the dragon and fairy tattoos, but it does not establish a complete tattoo inventory.

Who tattooed Eilish?
In the Vanity Fair interview, Eilish named Soda, Lucy, and Dragon as the artists associated with the tattoos she discussed: “Soda did this one. Lucy did this one. Dragon did this one.” The transcript does not map every artist to every later-reported tattoo, so those names should not be assigned to the back or lower-stomach pieces on this evidence.
