Bill Skarsgård reprises Pennywise in HBO’s IT: Welcome to Derry. The series holds back the clown’s first direct appearance until near the end of episode five, using other manifestations of IT to build suspense. HBO’s official cast announcement confirms Skarsgård’s place in the series; a second season has also been announced, with a new story set in 1935.
Is Bill Skarsgård back as Pennywise?
Yes. HBO’s official teaser announcement lists Bill Skarsgård among the cast of IT: Welcome to Derry, and a TV Guide interview with the creators describes him as reprising Pennywise from the two films. The cast listing confirms his involvement in the series, but it does not establish whether he will appear in season two.

When does Pennywise first appear?
According to the creators’ interview with TV Guide, Pennywise makes his first direct appearance near the end of episode five. That delayed reveal was a deliberate storytelling choice: co-creator Jason Fuchs and executive producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti said the series’ longer format gave them room to explore other forms of IT and gradually build anticipation before showing the clown.
Fuchs explained that the team wanted to use “the space that long form storytelling provides” to explore IT’s other manifestations. In the interview, he also noted that the creature can become many things, as it does in Stephen King’s book. The comment describes the creators’ intent, rather than making a claim about how every viewer responds to the pacing.

How does Welcome to Derry connect to the films and book?
Warner Bros. Discovery describes the series as based on Stephen King’s novel IT and as expanding the universe established in Andy Muschietti’s films IT and IT Chapter Two. It returns to Derry, the setting of King’s story, while giving the franchise room to explore events beyond the films’ central timeline.
