The reported medical cause
The phrase “surgery complications” was the family’s first public description, not a complete medical explanation. According to later reporting on the death certificate, Paxton suffered a stroke following the heart operation. The timing—11 days after surgery—was central to subsequent coverage of his death.
That distinction matters. A stroke after surgery can be discussed as a postoperative complication, but the available reports do not show that the stroke resulted from a particular act of negligence. They identify the medical event and the underlying heart procedure without resolving every question about causation.
What Paxton’s family alleged in the lawsuit
In 2018, Louise Paxton and the couple’s children sued Cedars-Sinai and Dr. Ali Khoynezhad. The complaint alleged that Khoynezhad used a high-risk and unconventional surgical approach, did not have sufficient experience with that approach and understated its risks to Paxton and his family.

The defendants disputed the claims. They maintained that Paxton and his family had understood and accepted the risks of the surgery and denied negligence. A separate case involving General Anesthesia Specialists Partnership ended with a reported $1 million settlement in February 2022. In August of that year, the family notified the court that it had reached a further settlement with Cedars-Sinai and Khoynezhad. The terms were confidential.
Why the legal outcome should be described carefully
Settlements resolved the lawsuits, but they are not the same as a verdict finding that a doctor or hospital caused Paxton’s death through malpractice. His television work included the HBO series Big Love, in which he played Bill Henrickson, a Utah businessman attempting to manage a complicated polygamous family life.
