In October 2022, several outlets reported, citing Puck, that Bill Murray and a woman who worked on the film Being Mortal reached a private settlement after she complained about his alleged conduct on set. Reports described the amount as more than, about, or just over $100,000; the agreement was not made public, so the exact figure and terms have not been independently established.
What was reported about the complaint
The Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, Vanity Fair, and Entertainment Tonight summarized Puck’s October 2022 reporting about an unnamed, younger female production staffer on Aziz Ansari’s film Being Mortal. According to that reporting, Murray allegedly kissed and straddled her near a bed used in production. She reportedly said she could not move under his weight and that he kissed her on the mouth while both were wearing masks. A second staffer was reported to have witnessed the encounter and filed a complaint as well.
These accounts describe allegations reported by Puck; the reviewed coverage does not establish them as adjudicated findings or independently verified facts. The Los Angeles Times’ account and The Guardian’s report attribute the underlying account to Puck.
How much was the reported settlement?
October 2022 coverage, relying on Puck’s reporting and sources, put the private settlement at around or above $100,000. The Los Angeles Times described it as “more than $100,000”; The Guardian called it “about $100,000,” while other coverage used wording such as “just north of $100,000.” The figure is therefore a rounded reported amount, not a confirmed exact public sum. The settlement agreement itself was not published in the reviewed reports.

What was reported about the agreement and production?
The reports said the woman and Murray went through mediation and reached a private settlement. Sources were reported as saying the agreement included confidentiality and a waiver of claims against the film’s producers, including Searchlight and Disney. Because the agreement was not made public, those terms should be understood as reported descriptions, not verified contract language.
Searchlight reportedly suspended Being Mortal after the complaint in April 2022. October coverage said production had not resumed at that point. That was the status described at the time of those reports and does not establish the film’s status today.

What did Bill Murray say?
In April 2022, Murray publicly characterized the incident as a “difference of opinion.” As quoted by the Los Angeles Times, he said: “I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way.” Entertainment Tonight also reported that Murray said he and the woman were talking and trying to make peace. His comments are his account of the matter and should be distinguished from the woman’s reported allegations.

Geena Davis has separately described alleged behavior by Murray during the production of Quick Change in her memoir Dying of Politeness. That is a different person’s account concerning a different production; it is not evidence for the Being Mortal complaint and was not part of the settlement described in the 2022 reports. Vanity Fair’s coverage discusses Davis’s account in that separate context.
