Bill Maher objected to Larry David’s use of Hitler in a satirical essay about Maher’s dinner with Donald Trump, calling the comparison insulting to Holocaust victims. What did Bill Maher say about Larry David’s essay?
In an April 24, 2025 interview with Piers Morgan on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Maher criticized David’s essay for invoking Hitler. The Guardian reported Maher saying it was “kind of insulting to 6 million dead Jews,” and that Hitler “has really kind of got to stay in his own place. He is the GOAT of evil.” The Guardian’s report of the interview attributes those remarks to Maher.
Maher’s objection was to the analogy and what he saw as its use of Hitler as a satirical comparison—not a claim that David had literally equated Trump with Hitler. Maher also defended his own account of meeting Trump: “Nobody has been harder, and more prescient, I must say, about Donald Trump than me. I don’t need to be lectured on who Donald Trump is. Just the fact that I met him in person didn’t change that. The fact that I reported honestly is not a sin either.”
What was “My Dinner With Adolf” about?
Larry David’s New York Times guest essay followed Maher’s account of a March 31, 2025 dinner with Trump. David imagined a dinner with Hitler in 1939, using the fictional encounter to satirize the logic of accepting an invitation and then finding the person unexpectedly charming. The essay’s point, as explained by the Times’ deputy opinion editor, was about seeing people clearly rather than treating Trump and Hitler as equivalent.

Patrick Healy said: “Larry’s piece is not equating Trump with Hitler. It is about seeing people for who they really are and not losing sight of that.” The Guardian reported Healy’s explanation on April 22, 2025. That is Healy’s account of the essay’s intent; Maher’s criticism reflects his separate view that invoking Hitler was inappropriate.
How did the dinner lead to the dispute?
Mutual friend Kid Rock arranged the dinner between Maher and Trump on March 31, 2025. Maher described it on Real Time on April 11, saying Trump was “gracious” and “much more self-aware than he lets on.” Maher said traits he disliked in Trump were absent that evening. David’s essay responded satirically to that description, turning the idea of a critic being disarmed by a powerful political figure into a fictional Hitler dinner.

What did Maher say about his friendship with David?
Maher said he considered David a friend and had not known about the essay until his publicist told him it had been published. He objected strongly to its premise but said he did not want the disagreement to become permanently personal. The available contemporaneous coverage documents the dispute in April 2025; it does not establish later developments in their friendship.
