WWE’s own setup for the June 28, 2025 Night of Champions match made the hypocrisy argument easy to see: John Cena was portrayed as threatening to leave with the championship, while CM Punk said he had taken the title in 2011 to save WWE, not ruin it. But the anger around the match also involved a separate issue: Cena retained after Seth Rollins and his allies interfered. Those are two different complaints, and the available evidence does not show how many fans held either view.
Why did the match raise a hypocrisy argument?
In WWE’s June 9 match preview, Cena and Punk were presented as holding opposing positions on the championship and the company. WWE said Cena had promised to “ruin wrestling by taking the title with him when he leaves.” The same preview said Punk maintained that, when he took the WWE Championship in 2011, he was trying to save WWE rather than ruin it. WWE’s preview framed those claims as the central conflict.
That framing helps explain the accusation in the headline: a viewer could see a contradiction between Punk’s past anti-company stance and his later place in WWE, or judge the two wrestlers’ stated intentions against one another. But the preview describes the characters’ storyline positions. It does not establish either man’s private motives, nor does it prove that one is objectively a hypocrite.
What did fans mean by calling Punk a hypocrite?
The criticism has a broader real-world version as well as the on-screen argument. Some commentary questions whether Punk’s later decisions and role in WWE sit comfortably alongside his earlier criticism of company power. A surfaced Cagematch user review makes that kind of accusation while discussing a different Punk match; a podcast episode listing also shows commentators raising the question “Is CM Punk a Hypocrite?” These examples document that the charge was being made, not that it represented most WWE fans.

It is useful to keep the two versions separate. The match preview’s “save versus ruin” contrast is WWE’s story framing. The criticism of Punk’s later relationship with WWE is an interpretation of his career and public position. The available fan material does not establish how widespread that view was, or whether it was the main reason for anger about this particular match.
How did the match finish, and why did that frustrate viewers?
Cena defeated Punk and retained the Undisputed WWE Championship on June 28, 2025. In WWE’s event recap, Rollins’s crew attacked Punk; later, Rollins hit Punk with the Money in the Bank briefcase and a Stomp before Cena made the decisive pin.

That finish creates a distinct booking complaint: viewers could object to the interference and the way Cena’s retention unfolded without making any claim about Punk’s consistency. Conversely, someone could find the hypocrisy debate compelling while accepting the match result. Treating these as separate issues avoids collapsing criticism of the characters’ rhetoric into criticism of the finish.
What led into the match?
The feud’s final promotional stretch included Punk delivering a “Basic Thuganomics” rap roast of Cena on the June 27 episode of SmackDown, according to WWE’s SmackDown recap. That segment added a personal, performative edge to the rivalry immediately before Night of Champions, but it does not by itself explain the range or scale of fan reaction.

- Established: WWE promoted the match through a contrast between Cena’s title-with-him threat and Punk’s claim that he had once tried to save WWE.
- Established: Cena retained after Rollins interfered, according to WWE’s recap.
- Documented as individual commentary: Some fan and podcast material raised hypocrisy as a criticism of Punk.
- Not established: A representative poll, a reliable count of angry fans, or evidence that hypocrisy rather than interference was the dominant complaint.
“Biggest Hypocrite Ever” is therefore best read as fan rhetoric, not a measured verdict. The match gave that rhetoric a clear storyline hook, while its interference-heavy finish supplied another reason for viewers to object.
