Big Freedia announced on May 15, 2025, that her partner of 20 years, Devon Hurst, had died at 38 from complications of diabetes. The public reports do not specify his type of diabetes or the medical events behind the reported complications.
What Big Freedia said about Devon Hurst’s death
In the announcement quoted by WVUE / FOX 8 New Orleans, Freedia wrote: “I’m devastated to have to announce that today my partner of 20 years, Devon Hurst, passed away peacefully due to complications from diabetes,” the station reported.
WVUE said the announcement was posted May 15, 2025, and published its report on May 17. The statement is the basis for reporting diabetes complications as the cause; it does not identify a diabetes type or a specific immediate medical event.
How old was Devon Hurst?
Hurst was 38, according to WVUE’s May 17, 2025, report. Freedia described him as her partner of 20 years in her announcement. She later spoke about their relationship in an interview with NPR republished by Georgia Public Broadcasting.

How Freedia spoke about grief and music
In an August 5, 2025, interview, Freedia discussed the loss and her album Pressing Onward, describing music as part of her healing. “This music is my healing more than anything,” she said in the interview republished by Georgia Public Broadcasting. A July 24, 2025, Guardian interview also discussed the album and her grief.
Pressing Onward was released on August 8, 2025. Amazon Music lists it as a 14-song digital album, while Big Freedia’s official store documents a vinyl edition; the store page showed the vinyl as sold out when reported.
