The New Day became one of WWE’s defining teams, but Big E says the group’s early identity was a struggle. In a 2026 interview, he recalled an abandoned Nation of Domination-inspired faction pitch, a poorly received motivational-preacher presentation, and months of pitching and house-show work that helped him, Xavier Woods, and Kofi Kingston develop into a trio.
Before The New Day, there were two abandoned faction names
Big E’s account comes from his 2026 appearance on Chris Van Vliet’s INSIGHT, transcribed in a June 26, 2026 report by 411MANIA. He recalled that he and Xavier Woods had earlier proposed a faction inspired by the Nation of Domination while they were in developmental wrestling at FCW.
That proposed group included Big E, Woods, Byron Saxton, and Abraham Washington. Big E said the name was first meant to be “The Clan,” but the office rejected it, leading to the alternative “The Plan.” The concept was eventually dropped in FCW. This was an earlier idea, not the settled identity of the later New Day.
Woods revived the idea when their direction stalled
Much later, after Big E and Woods felt their main-roster momentum had stalled, Woods brought forward another Nation-inspired faction concept. Big E remembers Woods being laughed out of the room, then asking him to give the idea a try. Big E agreed. In Wrestling Inc.’s June 29, 2026 report on the interview, Woods also suggested Kofi Kingston for the group. The outlet reported that Kingston was considering retirement at the time; that detail is part of its account of Big E’s interview, not a separately corroborated statement from Kingston.

Big E says he wanted the trio to be heels. The group’s eventual presentation, however, began in a different direction: positivity and motivational preaching. His recollection explains the creative evolution, but it does not establish the precise internal WWE decision process that produced each change.
Why Big E called the preacher gimmick a failure
Asked about the early motivational-preacher presentation, Big E’s response was blunt: “No, it sucks. It sucks, man. We were motivational preachers.” The line comes from the INSIGHT interview as transcribed by 411MANIA. It is his retrospective judgment, rather than a claim that every part of the group’s early work failed.

The audience response also turned negative. A 2024 article in the International Review for the Sociology of Sport describes the group as babyfaces preaching positivity and discusses the crowd eventually chanting “New Day sucks.” The scholarly analysis places that reaction in the context of performance and Black church cultural forms; it offers context, not proof of a single reason WWE changed the presentation.
Months of pitching and house shows helped the trio find its chemistry
Wrestling Inc. reports that the members spent months pitching ideas and working house shows together without a settled name. Big E credits the trio’s shared outlook, their preference for equal standing, and their chemistry as important to what they became. Those are his explanations of their connection, not independently established causes of the group’s success.

The drawn-out process matters to the story: The New Day was not simply a fully formed concept that succeeded on arrival. In Big E’s telling, the three kept developing the act while working together, even as the early presentation met resistance.

Big E’s individual achievement is separate. WWE’s description of the Sept. 13, 2021 episode of Raw Talk identifies it as his first interview as WWE Champion, with his New Day partners joining him. The official video page, “The New Day HATED their debut gear”, is another WWE look back at the group’s early presentation.
The record-setting team and Big E’s championship run show how far the group traveled from its uncertain beginnings. The origin story, though, is clearest as Big E tells it: an earlier pitch was dropped, the first main-roster approach missed, and the members continued working together until they found a version that fit.
