Julie Chen Moonves called Tucker Des Lauriers a fan favorite and chose him as her personal Reality Star of the Year in a 2024 interview about Big Brother 26. Her praise was a host’s personal assessment of one season—not an all-time ranking of the franchise’s players.
What did Julie Chen Moonves say about Tucker?
In an interview with Us Weekly published October 9, 2024, Chen Moonves said she tried to stay unbiased because of her journalism background, then acknowledged her personal reaction to Tucker’s popularity: “But I’m a human being, and everybody loved Tucker.” She named him her personal Reality Star of the Year.
That distinction matters: “everybody loved Tucker” was Chen Moonves’s description, not a poll result or a measured finding about all viewers. The interview supports calling Tucker a standout of season 26 from the host’s perspective; it does not establish that she ranked him among the greatest or most influential players in the show’s history.
Why did Tucker stand out during Big Brother 26?
The AI Arena kept eviction decisions unsettled
Chen Moonves discussed Tucker in the context of what she described as an unusually unpredictable season. Under the BB AI Arena format, the Head of Household nominated three people. On eviction night, those nominees competed live; the winner gained safety, leaving the other two for the houseguests’ eviction vote. Because players could not know in advance which nominees would remain vulnerable, Chen Moonves said the twist made it harder to settle on an eviction target ahead of time and pushed players toward individual decisions.

Tucker’s eviction came after an arena loss
Tucker was evicted in week 6 after losing the BB AI Arena competition, according to the interview’s account of the season. Chen Moonves said she had to hold back emotion as he lost. The twist ended after week 7, the interview reported.
What does her comment say about Tucker’s longer-term legacy?
Her award choice is evidence of how Chen Moonves viewed Tucker’s impact in 2024: as a memorable, popular figure in that season. It is not a detailed assessment of his all-time standing, nor does the interview compare his game with past players.

The show’s format helps explain why a season-specific impression is not the same as a franchise-wide verdict. In a TheWrap retrospective published August 27, 2026, the series’ history is traced from its U.S. debut in July 2000, based on a Dutch format. The first U.S. season used public voting; beginning with season 2, houseguests held the voting power, placing social interaction alongside competition. That broader format history gives context for evaluating players, but Chen Moonves’s Tucker remarks do not attempt that retrospective comparison.

TheWrap reported that Big Brother reached its 1,000th episode in 2026, with the milestone set for the then-upcoming Thursday broadcast. Chen Moonves told the outlet, “I’m humbled by [reaching 1,000 episodes] and no one’s more surprised than I am.” Her remarks about Tucker belong to a much narrower frame: a personal response to one contestant in one season, rather than a ranking across the series’ long run.
