Memes riffed on Kamala Harris, people recounted where they were when they heard the news, and Biden’s withdrawal letter was recaptioned for parody.
What happened when Biden left the race?
Biden announced on July 21, 2024, that he would not seek reelection as president. The decision followed pressure that intensified after his June 27 debate with Donald Trump. He made the announcement in a social media post; Axios reported that it appeared at about 1:46 p.m. Eastern and that news outlets cited the post as the official announcement. In a separate post, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. The withdrawal and endorsement were related but distinct messages: first, his decision not to run again; then, his support for Harris. Axios covered both posts.
How did the news travel online?
The announcement was shared and discussed across social platforms and group chats. Coverage also captured people describing the unusual or memorable ways they found out, prompting the question, “Where were you when Biden dropped out?” Those accounts show how some people encountered the breaking news; they are examples, not a comprehensive survey of public reaction or a measure of how widely any particular post spread.
