The temple’s calendar describes worship throughout the Tamil year, with Aadi observances, milk-pot worship on Chithirai full moon and processions on monthly full-moon days. It does not establish a single definitive annual festival date or duration.
The temple’s story of Bhavani Amman
The temple’s history places Bhavani Amman within the Krishna birth narrative. In its account, Kamsa seeks to kill Devaki’s eighth child. Krishna is born, while a girl associated with Yasoda is brought to the prison. When Kamsa tries to kill her, she escapes and warns him that the child destined to kill him is growing elsewhere. The temple identifies the girl as Mayadevi and associates her with Bhavani Amman, who manifested at Periyapalayam. The temple’s history tells this as devotional tradition, not independently established history.
The Tiruvallur District Administration gives a shorter version: it describes Amman as Krishna’s sister, who escaped Kamsa and settled at Periyapalayam. The district’s visitor page likewise presents the account as the temple’s religious tradition. The official sources reviewed substantiate this main origin story; they do not establish additional named legends.
When worship takes place
The temple calendar records several kinds of observance rather than one continuous, precisely dated festival: rites tied to Tamil months, recurring weekly worship and full-moon events. The district identifies Aadi and Avani as especially busy months, alongside weekends. The calendar’s English text is unclear in some entries, so details below are limited to the observances it describes intelligibly.

Aadi and weekly observances
For Aadi, the temple lists pandhakaal and Komatha poojai on the first Friday. It also describes Sunday worship, abhishekam and processions, an Amman swing service in the fourth week, and Friday nama archana. The English calendar says the Sunday observances continue through a 14-week period, but does not make that wording clear enough to establish a tidy annual schedule or duration. Consult a current temple announcement for dates and arrangements.
Full-moon rites
On Chithirai full moon, the calendar describes devotees carrying 108 pots of milk for abhishekam, followed by a decorated procession of the festival image. It also lists a special abhishekam for the main deity and a procession of the festival image on a wooden cart on monthly full-moon days.

Other Tamil-month entries
The calendar lists Thai Poosam with a 108-conch abhishekam. It also includes observances in Aavani, Purataasi, Aippasi, Kaarthigai and Maargazhi, but the English descriptions are inconsistent or difficult to interpret. The temple’s festival calendar does not supply a definitive Gregorian date for an annual Aadi festival. Check directly with the temple for a current schedule rather than inferring dates from the month-based listing.
Devotional practices and visiting context
The district administration describes devotees wearing neem leaves, offering Pongal, shaving their heads and performing angapradakshinam. These are practices associated with worship at the temple; the district page also gives time windows for some of them, which visitors should verify directly before relying on them.

Periyapalayam is about 45 km from Chennai, near Red Hills on the Chennai-Kolkata highway, according to the district administration. The district says frequent buses are available from Chennai and other cities, and notes that the temple is especially crowded on weekends and during Aadi and Avani. Its visitor page does not provide current opening hours or travel schedules, so confirm practical arrangements before setting out.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the exact Aadi festival date is not established here
The temple publishes a Tamil-month calendar and descriptions of recurring rites, but the available English listing does not resolve the Aadi Sunday schedule into a clear annual duration or exact dates. The district’s report of a minister inaugurating a program at the temple on July 20, 2025, during Aadi confirms an event on that date, but does not explain the program in detail or establish it as the annual festival date. The district press release should not be read as a complete festival schedule.
For a particular year’s dates, procession timings or visitor arrangements, rely on a current announcement from the temple or district rather than treating the calendar’s month-based entries as fixed Gregorian dates.
