Which songs are covers, and which use interpolations?
Cover versions and interpolations are references to existing songs, not necessarily guest collaborations. The Recording Academy identifies three covers: “BLACKBIIRD,” originally by The Beatles; “JOLENE,” originally by Dolly Parton; and “OH LOUISIANA,” originally by Chuck Berry.

“SMOKE HOUR WILLIE NELSON” includes interpolations of “Maybellene,” “Don’t Let Go” and “Down By The River Side.” “YA YA” references “Caro Mio Ben,” “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” and “Good Vibrations.” These song references should not be confused with the album’s featured performers. Sony Music Canada’s April 2, 2024 release characterizes the album as “about genres, all of them, while deeply rooted in Country,” and names Country, original R&B, blues, zydeco and Black folk among its influences. That is the label’s framing. The release also says “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” reached No. 1 on both Hot Country Songs and the Hot 100, making Beyoncé the first Black female artist to top both charts with a country song; it says the single appeared across nine genres on U.S. music charts. These are claims published by Sony Music Canada. Sony Music Canada release
Sony’s release attributes two comments to Beyoncé: “The joy of creating music is that there are no rules,” and, on her use of older instruments, “With artificial intelligence and digital filters and programming, I wanted to go back to real instruments, and I used very old ones.” These statements are presented by the label release, rather than as an independently recorded interview transcript.
