That history is more substantial than a single outfit attribution: Fleming’s appearance challenged assumptions about who could be visible in high fashion. Riché Richardson, a Cornell professor of Africana studies, has interpreted the album as challenging narrow ideas about race and country music and drawing attention to Black artists. In the Cornell Chronicle, Richardson said, “She’s challenging and deconstructing those perceptions and helping us to envision a more inclusive and expansive notion of American identity.” This is Richardson’s analysis of the work, not a direct explanation from Beyoncé of the album’s purpose or of the Fleming reference.
The wider cultural context includes barriers to belonging in country music and live music spaces. The Associated Press reported that a 2021 Country Music Association study found 26% of Black respondents said they listened to country weekly, while 20% of concert attendees of color said they had experienced racial profiling or harassment. Those figures are reported findings from the CMA study; they do not, by themselves, explain the album’s impact or audience.
