After Diane Keaton’s death at 79, her The First Wives Club co-stars Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn each paid tribute to her. Midler remembered Keaton as a singular, funny presence; Hawn recalled the friendship they built while making the 1996 comedy.
What Bette Midler said about Diane Keaton
In a tribute reported by the Associated Press on October 11, 2025, Midler praised Keaton’s humor and sincerity, writing: “She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”
Midler’s words focused on Keaton’s personality: her comic spirit and the openness Midler felt set her apart.
Goldie Hawn’s tribute recalled their friendship
Hawn’s Instagram tribute, quoted at greater length by Variety on October 12, 2025, looked back on the bond the two formed while working together. She remembered sharing coffee and laughter with Keaton in the makeup trailer and imagining that they would grow old together and perhaps one day live with their girlfriends.
