For an overnight YouTube livestream on a Windows PC, set the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never (or to a time longer than the session). Set the screen-off timeout separately: the display can turn off while the computer stays awake. On a laptop, also check what happens when you close the lid. These settings reduce the chance that Windows itself will suspend playback; they cannot guarantee that YouTube, your browser, or your internet connection will keep working all night.
Set sleep and screen timeouts separately
Windows has distinct controls for turning off the display and putting the computer to sleep. A dark screen does not by itself mean the PC has gone to sleep. Sleep suspends the active session, so for playback to continue, the plugged-in sleep timeout is the setting to change.
In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set the sleep option for when the device is plugged in to Never, or choose a duration longer than your planned viewing session. Adjust the plugged-in screen-off option independently to suit your preference.
Windows offers separate choices for battery and plugged-in use. For an all-night session, connect the computer to AC power and check the plugged-in options; do not assume a laptop battery will last for the full session.

Check the laptop lid-close action
Closing a laptop lid may put the computer to sleep, even if its sleep timeout is set to Never. Microsoft documents a separate lid-close action for battery and plugged-in operation, and notes that many PCs—especially laptops and tablets—sleep when the lid is closed. - Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- In the Plugged in column, choose an action that does not put the PC to sleep if playback must continue with the lid closed.
- Save the change and confirm how your particular laptop behaves before relying on it overnight.
Hardware and manufacturer configurations vary, so do not assume every laptop behaves the same way. If you leave the lid open, this setting may not matter for your session.

Power mode is not the sleep timer
Windows power mode affects the balance between efficiency and performance; it does not replace the sleep-timeout setting. Microsoft describes Balanced as balancing battery life and performance, and Best performance as maximizing performance. You generally do not need to change power mode merely to keep a stream playing if the plugged-in sleep timeout is configured correctly.
Power-mode choices depend on the Windows version and device. Microsoft notes that power mode selection may be unavailable on some Windows 10 PCs or when a custom power plan is in use. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; any Windows 10 power controls should be treated as legacy guidance rather than the current supported platform.

Use a short preflight check
- Connect the computer to AC power.
- In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts and set plugged-in sleep to Never or beyond the planned session.
- Choose a plugged-in screen-off time separately; turning off the screen is not the same as sleeping the PC.
- If using a laptop with its lid closed, check Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does and set the plugged-in action accordingly.
- Use an up-to-date supported browser and a reliable internet connection. YouTube says some live streams need faster connectivity and more processing power than ordinary viewing; close unnecessary tabs and programs if playback is struggling.
- Check YouTube’s Sleep Timer and make sure it is not set to pause playback during the intended session.
- Run a supervised test before depending on the setup overnight, including any lid-close behavior you plan to use.
This check is a practical precaution, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. Windows settings address the computer’s power behavior, not stream availability, YouTube playback, browser errors, or network outages.
Windows defaults are not overnight recommendations
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 guidance lists plugged-in defaults that vary by device: modern standby devices have a 5-minute screen-off default and a 5-minute sleep default; S3 devices have a 15-minute plugged-in sleep default. These are documented defaults, not settings suited to an overnight stream. Check your own device’s drop-downs rather than assuming its current timeout.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops
If the PC is still awake but playback has ended or paused, investigate the stream and playback separately from Windows power settings.

YouTube’s system requirements page gives 500+ Kbps for ordinary viewing and recommends 1+ Mbps for the premium movie, TV, and live content it describes. Those figures are not guarantees of stable playback at every resolution: YouTube says playback quality adapts to connection speed, player size, source quality, and browser. A wired connection is an optional troubleshooting step, not a requirement for changing Windows power settings.
