There is no official, definitive ranking of the best Vine videos. The strongest compilation is a matter of taste: Vine’s six-second looping format produced everything from sharp comedy and inventive edits to animal clips, performances, sports moments, and short stories. This guide explains how to think about those favorites, points to a documented historical selection, and sets expectations for finding old clips today.
What made a Vine video work?
Vine launched on January 24, 2013, built around short videos that looped. Twitter described the format in its first-anniversary post: “The creative community that has embraced Vine’s short, looping videos has shown that you can tell a whole story, make people laugh and even leave people speechless –– in six seconds or less.” The time limit rewarded a quick setup, a visual surprise, a perfectly timed reaction, or an ending that made the loop feel like a punchline.
That compact form is why “best” can mean several things. A clip may be memorable because it makes a joke land instantly, because its editing is unusually inventive, or because a performer, animal, or unexpected real-world moment gives it a distinct character. A good compilation can bring those different pleasures together rather than pretending that one list settles the question.
How to judge a “best Vine” compilation
- Editorial favorites: These selections emphasize humor, craft, cultural memory, or variety. They are recommendations, not objective rankings.
- Popularity lists: These reflect platform activity, which is a different measure from comedy or artistic merit. Historical loop counts should be treated as dated figures, not current totals.
- Format and context: A compilation might contain intact originals, reposts, or edited excerpts. The distinction matters: cuts, captions, and sequencing can change how a short clip plays.
- Range: A varied selection can include comedy, creative editing, animals, music and performance, sports or news moments, and short narrative sketches.
A documented editorial selection
TIME published a 2016 retrospective selecting 17 videos for its “greatest Vines” list. It is a useful example of an editorial roundup, but not an official all-time ranking or proof of universal agreement. Readers looking for an entry point can use that list as one curator’s snapshot of what stood out at the time.

Why a popularity list is not the same as a favorites list
TIME also reported on Vine’s most-looped videos, describing “loops” as the measure used for views on the platform’s most-popular list. In 2016, TIME reported that the leading clip—footage from inside the Stade de France during the November 2015 Paris attacks—had nearly 330 million views at publication time. That is a historical platform figure, not a current count, and the clip documents a deadly event; it should not be treated as light entertainment or stripped of its context.
The comparison is straightforward: an editorial list asks which clips a curator considers memorable, while a popularity list records platform activity under a particular measure and at a particular time. Neither alone establishes a definitive set of the “best” Vines.

Can you still watch old Vine videos?
Vine’s mobile app was discontinued after an announcement in October 2016. In January 2017, the app transitioned to Vine Camera, which could still create six-second looping videos and post them to Twitter or save them locally. Vine also described its website archive as a “time capsule” of posts made to vine.co from 2013–2017.
That archive is not a guarantee that every original clip can still be viewed. X’s FAQ says the complete Vine archive is no longer available. Individual clips may persist in reposts or compilations, but the availability, completeness, and reuse rights of a particular third-party upload are not established by the existence of the former archive. Treat current links as individual sources to check, not as proof that the original Vine collection remains intact.

Choosing a compilation to watch
- Decide what you want from it. For a cross-section of Vine culture, look for a compilation that mixes comedy with creative edits, performance, animals, or short narrative clips. For historical popularity, seek a clearly dated list rather than assuming an old ranking is current.
- Check the format. Notice whether the video presents original clips intact or uses edits, added captions, and reordered excerpts. Those choices affect timing and meaning.
- Check attribution and context. A repost may not identify the original creator, and clips of news events may need context beyond a quick punchline or montage.
- Expect gaps. No present-day compilation should be assumed to reproduce Vine’s complete archive; the official FAQ says that archive is no longer complete.
