The best video recording software for a small business depends on what you need to make: Loom suits quick recordings and link sharing, OBS Studio offers configurable local capture and streaming without a software license fee, Riverside is built for remote conversations and multitrack content, and Camtasia or ScreenFlow may suit edited tutorials. Choose by workflow first, then confirm current plan limits, platform support, and hardware needs.
Choose software by the job
Before comparing brand names, decide what the finished video needs to do. A short internal update has different requirements from a polished training course or a remote interview that will be edited into several clips.
- Quick asynchronous updates or demos: prioritize a fast record-and-share workflow.
- Screen tutorials and training: look for editing tools such as annotations, zooms, and transitions.
- Remote interviews, podcasts, or customer calls: check for separate participant tracks that can be edited independently.
- Live-stream production or configurable capture: consider a tool that gives an operator control over sources and output settings.
- Team adoption: weigh ease of use, shared libraries, permissions, file ownership, and billing—not just recording features.
Compare each candidate on its capture inputs (screen, window, system audio, microphone, webcam, guests, or capture card), post-production tools, sharing and hosting, team workflow, platform and hardware requirements, price structure, and learning effort. A high advertised resolution does not guarantee the same result on every computer or connection; make a short test recording before an important session.
Best options by workflow
Loom: quick recordings and sharing
Loom is a reasonable choice when the goal is to record a screen, optionally include a camera, and share the result through a link. Its recorder guidance describes selecting a microphone, recording screen-only or screen-plus-camera, automatic upload, and link creation. Loom positions the workflow for explainers, team updates, sales contacts, and product demos. The page distinguishes basic Chrome-extension features from more advanced desktop-app features; check current plan limits and features before relying on a specific capability. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
An existing laptop microphone and camera may be enough. If spoken narration is important and the built-in audio is inadequate, a USB microphone is an optional upgrade, not a requirement. OBS Studio: configurable local recording and streaming
OBS Studio is free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. It supports real-time video and audio capture and mixing, scenes, webcams, capture cards, and per-source audio filters. It is a strong candidate when someone on the team can configure sources, devices, output settings, and local storage. The OBS Help Portal says OBS is distributed under the GPLv2 license, has no watermark or usage restrictions, and can be used commercially. Download it from the official OBS website; the project warns against third-party sites charging for the software. OBS Project · OBS Help Portal
For setup, the official quick-start guide covers display or window capture, webcam sources, microphone and desktop audio, and testing settings before the real session. The computer’s workload depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so test on the actual machine rather than assuming a configuration will work. OBS quick-start guide

Riverside: remote conversations and multitrack content
Riverside is aimed at workflows including internal knowledge sharing, tutorials and demos, webinars, recorded meetings, customer testimonials, onboarding, and remote user calls. Its local recording workflow can produce separate participant audio, video, and screen-share tracks, which can help when the final edit needs independent control over speakers or screen content.

Riverside’s business page lists Free, Pro, Live, Webinar, and Business tiers at $24/month, $34/month, $79/month, and custom pricing for the latter four paid tiers, respectively; verify current billing cadence and regional checkout details. The page recommends at least 8 physical processing cores for video recording or 4 for audio, a 10 Mbps/5 Mbps connection, compatible operating systems and browser, and storage headroom. These are Riverside’s published recommendations, not universal minimum requirements. Riverside business plans and requirements
Riverside’s comparison, last updated September 18, 2026, says its author recorded the same session across nine tools on an M3 MacBook Pro and a Windows PC, then checked output resolution, file size, separate tracks, and time to a usable file. It recommends Riverside for remote video and podcasts. That test method and recommendation belong to Riverside’s own comparison, so treat them as vendor-published editorial claims rather than an independent benchmark. Camtasia and ScreenFlow: edited screen tutorials
Camtasia and ScreenFlow are candidates when a screen recording needs more polish than a quick link share. A TechRadar comparison describes Camtasia’s editing, annotations, transitions, and webcam use, and ScreenFlow as a Mac-only recorder/editor with cropping, pan and zoom, annotations, and webcam capture. Riverside’s comparison identifies Camtasia for tutorials and training. Current official editions, supported operating-system versions, prices, and feature availability are not established here; check the vendors’ current documentation before purchasing. What to check before buying
Capture and editing fit
Write down exactly what must be recorded: screen or application window, system audio, narration, webcam, guests, or a capture card. Then identify the post-production work: trimming, annotations, zooms, captions or transcripts, separate tracks, or clips. A simple recorder may be enough for a one-take update; a recurring training or interview workflow may justify more editing control.
Sharing, team ownership, and billing
Decide whether automatic upload and a hosted share link are useful, or whether the team needs to export files to a business-controlled destination. For team use, confirm who can access recordings, how libraries and permissions work, and what happens to files when a member leaves. Compare free-tier limits and per-user billing with the specific editing and storage features your workflow needs. For Loom, also check whether purchasing through Loom.com or Atlassian.com changes the administration and billing arrangement.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Compatibility and a practical test
Check operating system, browser, processor, available storage, camera and audio devices, and network conditions against the vendor’s current requirements. Make a short test that uses the intended sources and output settings, then check the resulting file or playback before recording a customer interview, training session, or webinar. Riverside recommends storage headroom, and OBS notes that system requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
Optional equipment
Screen-only capture does not require a webcam or an external microphone. A connected USB microphone can be useful when clear narration matters and the built-in microphone is not adequate; a USB webcam is relevant only if the presenter should appear on screen. Teams keeping large local or multitrack recordings may need to plan storage capacity, but the available guidance does not support a blanket recommendation for a particular external drive.

There is no universal best app for every small business, and the recommendations above are based on vendor pages and published comparisons rather than hands-on testing for this article. The Riverside comparison is published by a vendor in the category, while TechRadar’s comparison is titled for 2025 and is useful for broad feature distinctions rather than current specifications.
