There is no single streaming app established here as an all-in-one source of YouTube Live captions. YouTube needs caption data sent to the stream, either embedded in the video or delivered through its supported caption-ingestion workflow. YouTube’s own automatic live captions may be the simplest option for eligible English-language streams at normal latency; for controlled or event captioning, pair an encoder such as OBS Studio with a separately configured caption path.
Choose the caption route before choosing an encoder
A streaming encoder sends your audio and video to YouTube. That does not, by itself, mean captions are being generated or delivered. YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
First decide whether you need platform-generated English captions, embedded caption data, or a captioning service feeding YouTube. Then choose streaming software that fits the rest of your production. Captions viewers can toggle are different from text burned visibly into the picture; the YouTube workflows below concern caption delivery, not overlay creation.
Compare the practical options
| Option | What it does | Caption fit and limits | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic live captions | Generates English captions within YouTube Studio for eligible live streams. | Availability depends on rollout and eligibility; the stream must use normal latency. Captions must be enabled for each stream. They do not remain on the finished live broadcast; YouTube creates VOD captions separately, which may differ. YouTube Help | An eligible English-language stream where platform-generated live captions are sufficient. |
| OBS Studio | Open-source streaming and recording software that connects to a streaming destination. OBS Project download · OBS streaming guide | OBS is an encoder, not a confirmed automatic YouTube caption generator. Configure embedded caption data or a separate supported caption-delivery workflow. YouTube Help | Creators who want a flexible encoder and can configure caption delivery separately. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Streamlabs says Desktop can stream to YouTube Live; basic tools are free, with optional Ultra features. Streamlabs YouTube guide | The reviewed guide does not establish built-in YouTube closed-caption generation or caption ingestion. Confirm the caption path separately. | Creators who prefer its creator-tool interface and have a separate, verified caption setup. |
| Streamlabs Plugin for OBS | Adds Streamlabs creator features to OBS; the reviewed guide says it requires OBS 28.0.0 or later and is available on Windows. Streamlabs plugin guide | The guide does not claim the plugin generates captions. Use a separate caption workflow. | Windows OBS users who want the plugin’s creator features without treating it as a caption solution. |
| Professional caption software or service | Provides a caption feed for YouTube’s event workflow, using compatible software and a captioner or service. | YouTube lists supported options and specifies a signed ingestion URL, broadcast delay, and one feed per stream entry point. Verify current vendor requirements and versions. YouTube Help · YouTube event caption instructions | Events needing a managed or professional caption-delivery workflow. |
The cited product pages do not establish a comparable caption-accuracy, language-coverage, latency, or price ranking for OBS and Streamlabs. Choose based on whether the caption path you need is supported and tested for your setup, rather than assuming a streaming app supplies captions.

Route 1: Enable YouTube automatic live captions
YouTube’s native live captions are English-only and are being rolled out to eligible English channels streaming at normal latency. They are not a channel-wide switch: enable them for each live stream. For current eligibility and controls, check YouTube’s live caption requirements in Studio.
Why captions may not appear
- The channel has not received the feature rollout or the stream is not eligible.
- The stream uses low or ultra-low latency rather than normal latency.
- The spoken language is unsupported.
- Audio is poor, speakers overlap, or multiple languages are spoken.
- Captions were not enabled for that individual stream.
Live automatic captions disappear when the live broadcast ends. YouTube creates captions for the video-on-demand replay separately, and those captions may not match the live captions. If the replay must have captions, check its caption track after processing instead of assuming the live track persists. YouTube Help

Route 2: Send embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
This is an encoder-level workflow: your encoder must send EIA 608 or CEA 708 caption data embedded with the video. In YouTube Live settings, enable captions and select the embedded 608/708 option, then configure the encoder to provide the caption data. Merely selecting OBS or another encoder does not create that data.
YouTube says EIA 608/CEA 708 can carry up to four language tracks, while YouTube currently supports one caption track. Treat that as a limit of the YouTube workflow, not a promise that multiple tracks will be exposed to viewers. Follow the current instructions at YouTube Help.

Route 3: Deliver captions through YouTube’s ingestion URL
For an event, YouTube documents a signed Captions Ingestion URL that you provide to compatible captioning software. This is a separate delivery path from the video encoder. YouTube’s event instructions call for a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay and allow one caption feed per stream entry point. The documented software list includes Total Eclipse/AccuCap version 6.0.0.5 or later, Case CATalyst BCS version 14.52 or later, CaptionMaker version 5.22 or later, and StreamText.Net, described as a cloud caption delivery system compatible with speech-to-text platforms. YouTube event caption instructions
- In YouTube Live settings, turn on closed captions and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to the captioner or configure it in compatible caption-delivery software, following the vendor’s current setup instructions.
- Set the broadcast delay to 30 or 60 seconds as YouTube directs, and confirm that the caption feed corresponds to the stream entry point in use.
- Test the complete stream and caption path before the event. Confirm that viewers can see and toggle captions and that timing is acceptable for the event.
YouTube’s listed minimum versions and compatibility notes are from its event caption guidance; verify the current requirements with YouTube and the vendor before relying on a particular version. The guidance establishes supported workflow details, not a comparative claim about accuracy, service level, or current product cost.

How to select software for a documentary stream
For a one-person English-language broadcast, start by checking whether YouTube automatic captions are available for your channel and whether normal latency suits the event. If you need more control, use an encoder such as OBS and separately configure embedded captions or an ingestion feed. For a multi-speaker event, a professional caption workflow may be more appropriate; confirm the vendor’s language support, operating-system compatibility, workflow, cost, and live support directly.
- Caption delivery: Does the setup send embedded data or a feed through YouTube’s ingestion URL?
- Language: Does the selected route support the language or languages your program uses?
- Latency: Is normal latency compatible with the caption option and the event format?
- Replay: Do you need captions on the archived video as well as during the live broadcast?
- Production fit: Does the encoder work with your operating system and existing production setup?
- Cost and terms: Check current vendor pricing and program terms; the official pages cited here do not provide a full caption-service price comparison.

OBS or Streamlabs is sending video but no captions appear
Confirm that caption data is actually configured. An encoder connection to YouTube is not evidence that captions are being generated. For embedded captions, verify the EIA 608/CEA 708 output and YouTube’s embedded-caption selection; for event captions, verify the signed ingestion URL and compatible software. YouTube Help
Live captions are absent from the replay
YouTube does not retain its live automatic captions as the finished stream’s caption track. Check for the separately generated VOD captions after processing, and review or correct them if needed. YouTube Help
Event captions are delayed or attached to the wrong feed
Recheck the required 30- or 60-second broadcast delay and ensure the caption feed is associated with the correct stream entry point. YouTube specifies one caption feed per stream entry point. YouTube event caption instructions
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded documentary footage looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than broadcast a live camera or produce a live event, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not generate captions, so configure captions through YouTube’s supported route if your stream needs them. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
