For many YouTube livestreams, 1080p is a sensible starting point—at 30 or 60 frames per second, depending on the motion in your video and what your connection can reliably deliver. YouTube does not designate one resolution as best for every stream: it recommends choosing a quality your internet connection can sustain and testing before you go live. Treat 1440p and 4K as upgrades for situations where the extra detail matters and your setup can maintain the higher bitrate.
How to choose a YouTube Live resolution
Start with the video your audience will see, then check whether your encoder and upload connection can sustain the required settings. A static documentary interview may not benefit from 60 fps as much as fast-moving footage, while fine visual detail may make a higher resolution worthwhile. These are practical choices, not a YouTube-mandated ranking.
- Choose 1080p as a practical starting point for many streams. Pick 30 fps for relatively calm scenes or 60 fps when smoother motion is useful and your setup can support the higher bitrate.
- Consider 1440p when added detail is useful to viewers and your connection can sustain its bitrate with headroom.
- Choose 4K (2160p) only when the extra detail justifies the substantially higher bitrate and normal-latency limitation.
YouTube says its encoder streams are transcoded into different output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. The resolution you send is therefore not the only playback format viewers may receive, but this does not guarantee a particular rendition for every stream. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. YouTube’s live encoder guidance explains these options.
Recommended livestream bitrate by resolution and frame rate
The following are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest bitrates in Mbps. Select the row for your actual resolution and frame rate, and the column for your video codec. They are recommendations, not guarantees of image quality. These are live-stream settings, not the separate encoding recommendations for uploaded videos.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For example, if you stream at 1080p60 using H.264, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps. Do not apply that figure to another codec or frame rate. YouTube’s live encoder page also lists minimum bitrate settings; check the current table if you need a minimum rather than a recommended target. See YouTube’s current encoder settings.
Check upload bandwidth before choosing the target
Your upload capacity—not your download speed—sets the practical limit. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. A connection that barely matches the target bitrate leaves no room for variation or other traffic.

- Measure your outbound upload speed, preferably under conditions similar to the planned broadcast.
- Account for other people, devices, and services using the same connection.
- Choose an encoder bitrate that fits within your available upload bandwidth with the recommended 20% margin.
- Run a test stream at the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Include representative audio and moving video, then check stream health and encoder messages.
If the stream is unstable, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until it is reliable. YouTube advises testing before the event and monitoring stream health. Its streaming tips cover bandwidth and connection checks.
Encoder settings beyond resolution
Resolution alone does not define a compatible stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS. Listed video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Color: For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709.
- HDR: YouTube’s guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
- Stream key: Use the correct key in your encoder. YouTube says manual resolution and frame-rate selection is available with a custom stream key; automatic detection is the default recommendation.
Confirm the current supported settings in YouTube’s live encoder guide before configuring a production, since platform options can change. A software or hardware encoder may suit workflows such as screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video gear, or a more advanced production; dedicated hardware is not required for every creator.
Latency and the trade-off with 4K
YouTube says low-latency optimization is unavailable for 2160p/4K livestreams; those streams use normal latency. If quick audience interaction matters, factor this limitation into the resolution decision rather than choosing 4K solely for its pixel count. Check YouTube’s encoder guidance for current latency details.

Troubleshooting a stream that will not hold its settings
- Stream health warnings or interruptions: Check outbound upload capacity, competing network use, and whether the selected bitrate leaves adequate headroom. Test at a lower bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- Encoder and YouTube settings do not match: Confirm the actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in the encoder. Set them to the intended target and consult YouTube’s current codec-specific recommendations.
- Image is less detailed than expected: Confirm the encoder is actually sending the chosen resolution and that the stream is stable at its recommended bitrate. YouTube transcodes livestreams for different devices and networks, so viewers may receive different output formats.
- 4K stream needs low latency: YouTube does not offer low-latency optimization for 2160p; use a lower resolution if low latency is essential.
- HDR compatibility concern: Check the current encoder guidance; YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and does not support AV1 for HDR.
