The best fit is the one that complements your avatar and keeps the game, alerts, and text easy to see. Here’s what to assess and how to add a StreamElements overlay to OBS.
What a stream overlay does
StreamElements Docs defines overlays as “the visuals layered on top of your stream — alerts, labels, goals, chat — composed in the StreamElements Overlay Editor and rendered in your broadcast software via a single browser source.” An overlay’s appearance is only part of its job: scene layouts frame the broadcast, while widgets can show events such as alerts, goals, recent followers, or chat.

What to look for in a VTuber overlay
Visual fit and usable space
Choose colors and decoration that work with your avatar and channel identity. Check that the layout leaves the game visible and gives the avatar, alerts, and any on-screen text room to breathe. The package listings do not score visual quality or accessibility, so assess the actual preview against your own content rather than relying on a theme label.
Ready-made or custom
A prebuilt package can give you coordinated scenes and widgets without starting from a blank canvas. Editing those elements can make the layout more specific to your channel; coding custom widgets is another option if you need functionality or presentation beyond the included controls.

Only include widgets you need
Decide whether viewers benefit from seeing alerts, recent-event labels, goals, or chat. An overlay can include all of these, but that does not mean they all belong on screen at once. Prioritize legibility for the avatar and game.
Motion, dimensions, and platform fit
StreamElements offers static and animated overlay options. Its Anime Theme Package listing names Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, and Trovo; check the current requirements for the platform and broadcast software you actually use. For OBS, match the Browser source dimensions to your stream canvas. The StreamElements guide specifies 1920×1080 unless the source dimensions have been changed, and suggests 30 or 60 FPS according to stream settings and computer capability—not as a universal performance recommendation.

Documented option: StreamElements Anime Theme Package
StreamElements describes this as an animated anime stream package designed by anime illustrator Mercedes Bazan and lists it as 100% free. Its listed contents are:
- Starting Soon, Be Right Back, Stream Ended, and Chatting scenes.
- A modular, customizable gaming scene.
- An animated alert and themed chat box.
- Labels for recent subscriber, follower, tipper, and cheer events.
That bundle makes it relevant to VTubers looking for an anime-inspired starting point. The description is vendor-authored and does not establish that it is better than other themes. StreamElements’ Elements Gallery also has categories for themes, alerts, widgets, scenes, and labels, with packages attributed to contributors such as kudos.tv and Own3d and a link to Fiverr for custom design. Treat these as options to inspect, not endorsements.

Add a StreamElements overlay to OBS
- Create or choose an overlay: Use the StreamElements dashboard or editor to select a package or build an overlay. Set it up for the resolution you intend to broadcast at.
- Copy the overlay URL: Copy it from the dashboard or editor. Treat the URL as sensitive: StreamElements’ setup material says it contains a token. Do not publish it or expose it in screenshots or shared scenes.
- Add it in OBS: In the Sources area, select + and choose Browser. Paste the overlay URL into the URL field.
- Set the Browser source size: Use width 1920 and height 1080 unless you changed the source resolution. Match the source to your actual canvas if it differs.
- Choose the source frame rate: Use 30 or 60 FPS according to your stream settings and computer capability. StreamElements’ guide does not establish one choice as best for every setup.
- Leave Custom CSS at its default for this setup: The OBS guide recommends that default for its documented workflow.
- Position and check the result: Move or resize the overlay in the editor or OBS preview. Confirm the game, avatar, text, and alerts remain visible in the scene.
The guide also describes using multiple overlays in OBS. Add only the layers your scene needs, and check that they do not cover one another or obscure important content.

For its Twitch chat widget, StreamElements recommends creating an overlay at the desired resolution (1080p is its recommendation), adding the stream chat widget, and adjusting its size, theme, font, color, text size, and text shadow. Its documentation says the widget supports Twitch emotes, including animated ones, plus BTTV, FFZ, and 7TV emotes; unlisted 7TV emotes are not supported. This is documented support for that widget, not a guarantee about every overlay tool.

Preview chat at the size viewers will see it. Keep it clear of the avatar and game information, and remove it if it makes the scene harder to follow. The vendor material describes styling controls but does not provide formal legibility measurements.
