Do the Right Thing is the strongest starting point—and the most defensible No. 1—among the Spike Lee films supported here. Malcolm X is the other essential pick, distinguished by its historical-biopic approach and Denzel Washington’s lead performance. This is an editorial ranking, not an objectively settled order.
How this ranking is scoped
This ranking covers narrative feature films directed by Spike Lee. It does not include documentaries, concert films, television work, or films on which Lee served only as a producer. That distinction matters: some online rankings combine films and series, then sort them by audience or critic scores. Those lists answer a different question.

The order here weighs critical reputation, cultural and historical significance, filmmaking ambition, performances, and how well each film works as a first watch. Aggregate scores can offer context, but they do not determine the ranking.
1. Do the Right Thing (1989)
Lee’s most compelling entry point on this list is also its top-ranked film. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus describes it as one of Lee’s most fully realized efforts and one of the most important films of the 1980s. The film’s standing reaches beyond that one site: it placed 24= in the BFI and Sight and Sound 2022 greatest-films survey, whose coverage notes its continuing cultural influence.

The case for putting it first is the convergence of critical acclaim, lasting cultural significance, and a clear place in Lee’s body of work. It is a strong first choice for viewers who want to begin with a film that has both a well-established reputation and substantial historical recognition.
As a time-sensitive snapshot, Rotten Tomatoes reported a 92% Tomatometer score from 151 reviews and an 89% Popcornmeter score from 50,000+ ratings when accessed in 2026. Those figures can change; they are context, not the reason for the film’s position here.
Rank #2
2. Malcolm X (1992)
Malcolm X is the other leading choice, and the strongest alternative if you want a historical biopic rather than the kind of film represented by Do the Right Thing. Lee’s film tells the story of civil-rights leader Malcolm X, with Denzel Washington in the title role. Its historical subject and lead performance give it a distinct place in this short ranking.
It ranks second not because the evidence establishes a definitive gap in quality, but because the available support for Do the Right Thing includes both a critics’ consensus and recognition in a broad greatest-films survey. The ordering remains an editorial judgment; those sources establish prominence, not a universally correct sequence.

Which one should you watch first?
- Start with Do the Right Thing if you want the top-ranked choice, supported by both a favorable critical consensus and recognition in the 2022 BFI and Sight and Sound survey.
- Choose Malcolm X if you are more drawn to a biographical film about a major civil-rights leader and Denzel Washington in the title role.
Viewing availability varies by region and changes over time. A Rotten Tomatoes listing that points to rent-or-buy options is not a guarantee that a particular service currently carries the film where you live.
