They cover the thighs and can reduce skin-on-skin rubbing. Choose a length that stays hidden beneath your dress while covering the area you want protected, then compare fabric weight, breathability, seams, color, and whether you want smoothing as well as coverage.
What to look for in shorts under a dress
Start with the purpose: thigh coverage, less friction, modesty while moving, or a smoother silhouette. A coverage-focused slip short is the simplest option for an underlayer. Smoothing shorts add shaping as an intended function and may feel more substantial.
Brand guidance from Primark describes shorts as a barrier against friction and recommends smooth, snug, moisture-wicking fabric. These are useful features to consider, not guarantees that a particular pair will stay in place or feel comfortable for every wearer.
How to choose a pair
Match the length to the dress and activity
Check the hem while standing and moving, then choose an inseam that remains covered. Shorter legs can work beneath higher hems; longer legs cover more of the thigh. A shorter inseam may leave more skin exposed or be more prone to riding up during vigorous movement, but the result depends on the wearer, dress, and activity. Balance lightness, coverage, and breathability
Compare fabric weight and breathability against the coverage you want. Thigh Society describes The Cooling as thin and breathable, while its Original is described as providing coverage under dresses. Primark highlights stretch, moisture-wicking fabric, and soft hems or bands. These are brand descriptions, not independent tests comparing products.
Check seams, hems, waistband, and stretch
Look at how the leg openings and seams are finished, whether the waistband feels comfortable, and whether the fabric stretches without feeling restrictive. Seamless construction or soft hems may be worth considering under a close-fitting dress, but product features alone do not establish how discreet or comfortable a short will be on your body.

Decide whether you want smoothing
If you want coverage and friction reduction without a shaping goal, a basic slip short may be enough. ThirdLove describes its ComfortStretch Smoothing Anti-Chafe Short as high-rise, smoothing, and intended to provide coverage under dresses. That is the brand’s product description; available evidence does not establish how its compression, visibility, or comfort compares with other shorts.
Consider color and opacity
Choose a color and fabric opacity for the specific dress, especially if its material is thin or light-colored. There is no single color-matching rule that works for every fabric and skin tone, so check the actual combination in the light in which you expect to wear it.

Check the gusset and underwear guidance
Some shorts have a gusset and are marketed for wear without additional underwear. Thigh Society says The Cooling has a cotton-rich crotch and can be worn without underwear if preferred. This should not be assumed of every pair: check the individual garment’s construction and care instructions.
