It enables background music playback, but it does not guarantee that an unattended YouTube video or livestream will play uninterrupted all night. YouTube may pause autoplay with a “Continue watching?” prompt; for a planned bedtime cutoff, use the sleep timer instead.

For a study-music playlist, decide first whether you need the YouTube Music app to keep playing in the background, a scheduled stop, or an unattended YouTube video or livestream. Those are different playback needs.
For phone listening with the screen off: YouTube Music Premium
YouTube Music Help says Premium members can listen to music and podcasts while using other apps or with the screen off. The listed Premium benefits also include ad-free music, audio-only mode, and downloads. Benefits vary by location, and podcasts may still contain ads. Check local availability and the membership terms for your account.
If background playback does not work in the YouTube app on Android, YouTube’s guidance is to check that your Premium membership is active, the feature is available in your location, background-play settings are enabled, the app and connection are working, and another app is not taking over audio playback. YouTube Premium is required for background play in the YouTube app; this is distinct from using YouTube Music Premium for music.

Why autoplay may not last all night
With autoplay on, YouTube says it may show “Video paused. Continue watching?” before 30 minutes of uninterrupted watching on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV. These are the stated intervals before a prompt may appear, not a guarantee that playback will last for that duration or stop at exactly that time. An unattended device may therefore need someone to dismiss the prompt.
The sleep timer does the opposite of keeping a stream running: it automatically pauses a video after the time you choose. Use it when you want playback to stop after a bedtime listening window, not when you need music to continue until morning.

Cast YouTube Music to a speaker
A Google Cast-compatible speaker is another option for YouTube Music. Google’s help documentation says cast music can continue after you exit Chrome, close the web app, or turn off the computer. Confirm that your speaker supports Google Cast and that the casting setup works with your account. This documented behavior applies to YouTube Music; it does not establish that every YouTube livestream or other playback setup will continue unattended overnight.

What to check before leaving playback on overnight
- Choose the right app or setup: YouTube Music background playback, YouTube video autoplay, a Cast speaker, and a channel livestream are not interchangeable.
- For screen-off phone listening, confirm Premium background-play eligibility and settings for your location and account.
- If you want a scheduled cutoff, set the sleep timer rather than relying on autoplay behavior.
- If you cast music, check speaker compatibility and test the setup you plan to use; documented YouTube Music casting behavior should not be assumed for every stream.
- For a channel broadcasting uploaded videos, check that you have the rights to use the music and recordings. A live broadcast does not make copyrighted material permissible.
Troubleshooting overnight playback
