Before deciding, list the material your edit needs: shared slides, presenter camera, guest video, desktop audio, microphone, chat, poll results, or captions. Zoom: check native recording before adding another tool
Computer recording
Zoom says computer recording is available to free and paid subscribers using supported desktop clients. It is not supported on iOS, iPad, or Android, and an administrator may control whether users can record. Computer recording can capture the desktop, making it a practical first option for teams already hosting in Zoom. Confirm recording permission and test the intended layout before the event. Cloud recording and output choices
Zoom’s cloud-recording settings can produce combined or separate speaker, gallery, screen, and participant-audio files, with optional chat and caption outputs. Zoom Recording Studio: useful for some edits, not a universal webinar switch
Zoom documents Recording Studio for qualifying single-session events, with Webinars Plus or Events licensing, cloud recording, supported desktop clients, adequate storage, and participant local storage among its requirements. The support page says webinar event types are unsupported. Verify that your specific event type and account qualify before planning around it. Zoom Recording Studio requirements
Know what stays out of the local files
Recording Studio can create local participant video and audio files, but Zoom says screen shares are captured in the cloud recording only, not in local files. If the edit needs the presentation alongside the participant tracks, plan to use the cloud screen-share recording in post-production.

Plan for storage and upload completion
Zoom’s support page estimates Recording Studio storage at approximately 2–3 GB per hour at 1080p60. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed file size. Zoom also warns that local-file uploads can fail if a client quits or loses network connectivity. Check available storage and connectivity, and allow uploads to complete before closing the client.
OBS Studio: flexible desktop capture you operate yourself
OBS Studio is a standalone choice when you want to control what the recording captures. Its official quick-start guide covers display or window capture, webcam, desktop audio, and microphone audio. This can suit a presenter who wants a configurable screen-and-mic file, but OBS is not a webinar platform and does not itself preserve webinar chat, polls, captions, or other event-native materials. Make a short test before the event
- In OBS, add the display or window source that contains the slides or demonstration. Add a webcam source if the presenter should appear in the recording.
- Check the audio meters while speaking and playing any sound that needs to be recorded. Confirm the selected microphone and desktop-audio device are the intended ones.
- Record a few minutes, as OBS’s guide recommends. Review the resulting file for picture framing, readable text, sound levels, and whether both microphone and desktop audio are present.
- Check disk space and keep the computer operating throughout the session. A local desktop recording depends on the machine and its recording setup.
Riverside: consider it when separate participant tracks matter
Riverside advertises separate local participant tracks, up to 4K video, and uncompressed audio for business recording. These are vendor capability claims, not a comparative test; confirm that the current plan supports your required workflow before subscribing. Local participant capture can support post-production, but it is not a substitute for checking whether the webinar’s shared screen and event materials are recorded the way your edit requires. Riverside’s pricing page lists separate-track download allowances of 15 hours on Pro, 20 on Grow, and 25 on Webinar, while describing recording as unlimited. Prepare the recording workflow before attendees arrive
- Confirm event compatibility: Check the selected tool against the exact event type, especially if you intend to use Zoom Recording Studio.
- Confirm permissions: Enable recording at the account and user level, and check whether an administrator controls the setting.
- Decide how files will fit together: If using Recording Studio, decide whether a cloud screen-share recording is acceptable alongside local participant files.
- Check capacity and connectivity: Verify disk space, cloud storage quota, supported client and operating system, and a stable connection for uploads.
- Run a test: Make and review a short recording, including a check of the audio meters and resulting file.
- Set participant expectations: Decide who is responsible for recording and how participants will be informed. Applicable requirements vary by jurisdiction; seek appropriate guidance for your situation.
