The right online teleprompter for a livestream depends on how you capture your camera, where you want the script, and whether you prefer fixed-speed scrolling or a prompt that follows your speech. For a solo OBS setup, a narrow floating window near the lens is often practical—but use a camera or selected-window source, not whole-display capture, or the prompt may appear in the stream. The options below are compared by documented features and workflow, not by controlled head-to-head testing.
Choose a teleprompter by the way you stream
Start with the setup constraint that matters most: operating system and browser, whether the prompt must float over another app, how it scrolls, and whether you need remote control or multiple synchronized screens. Vendor documentation describes features, but it does not establish comparative performance or guarantee that a tool will behave identically on every computer.

For a free floating prompt
Floating Teleprompter is a documented option if you use desktop Chrome or Edge and want a separate always-on-top window. If you use a phone or a different browser, plan on fullscreen rather than assuming the floating feature will be available.
For Windows sponsor cues
ScriptCue is aimed at prepared segments and sponsor reads in Windows streaming workflows. Its key practical requirement is capture selection: capturing a specific game or window can exclude its prompt, while capturing the whole display can expose it.

For speech-following scroll
Cuefyr and Elgato describe voice-following features. That is a feature distinction, not proof that voice tracking will match every speaker, microphone, pause, or room. Rehearse with the actual microphone and scene before relying on it live.
For phone control or multiple displays
Castrix documents QR-paired displays and phone or Bluetooth-clicker control, with manual, timed, and voice modes. That may suit a small production with a separate operator better than a simple floating window.
For a physical prompt at the lens
Elgato Prompter is the hardware option in this shortlist: its beamsplitter display is designed to put text near the camera eye-line. It is not necessary for software prompting; consider it when that physical placement is worth the added hardware and mounting setup.

Keep the prompt out of the livestream
In OBS, the capture source determines whether viewers can see a floating prompt. A camera source or selected-window/game source can leave the prompt out; whole-display capture may include it. Cuefyr gives the same practical distinction for camera or selected-window capture versus display capture. A display capture can also expose private notes or other desktop content, so verify the output before broadcasting.

Make the window narrow and place it directly below or beside the lens to limit visible eye movement. Cuefyr specifically recommends a narrow window close to the lens.
- Choose the OBS source deliberately. Use your camera source for the camera image, or capture only the particular application or game you need. Avoid whole-display capture when the prompt is visible on that desktop.
- Check the actual output. Record a private test or inspect the OBS preview with the script running. Confirm the text is absent from the outgoing composition before going live.
- Test your specific browser and device. For Floating Teleprompter, the vendor documents always-on-top behavior in desktop Chrome and Edge; elsewhere, expect fullscreen as the fallback.
Choose a scroll method that fits live delivery
There is no single scrolling mode that suits every script. A tightly timed sponsor read, a flexible interview introduction, and a longer educational segment put different demands on pacing.
- Fixed auto-scroll: Set a steady pace for text you have rehearsed. OBS Teleprompter documents adjustable auto-scroll; Floating Teleprompter also lists auto-scroll.
- Manual control: Use controls or a clicker when you need to pause for emphasis or change pace yourself. Castrix documents manual control and Bluetooth clicker support.
- Timed scroll: A timed pace can work for planned delivery, but practice pauses and transitions so the text does not run ahead of you. Castrix lists timed scrolling.
- Voice-following: Cuefyr and Elgato describe prompts that adapt to speech. Try the feature with your real microphone, including pauses, ad-libs, and changes in delivery; vendor feature descriptions are not independent accuracy tests.
For Elgato Voice Sync, confirm the published device requirements first: NVIDIA RTX 2060 or newer on Windows, or Apple M1 or newer on macOS. Cuefyr advises checking that the same microphone is selected in the prompter and OBS.

Check privacy, offline use, and control before choosing
These details can matter as much as scrolling. Floating Teleprompter says scripts remain in local browser storage and that the tool can work offline after the first load; those are vendor statements, not independently audited privacy guarantees. CloudPrompter describes offline production through its iOS and Mac apps. If script confidentiality is important, review the relevant provider’s current terms and test the workflow before loading sensitive material.
- Browser and operating system: Confirm the feature you need is supported on the exact browser and device you use. Floating Teleprompter’s floating mode is specified for desktop Chrome and Edge.
- Remote operation: Castrix documents phone remote and Bluetooth-clicker control; OBS Teleprompter documents remote viewing from another device. Remote viewing and remote control are different needs.
- Multiple screens: Castrix documents QR-paired displays. If you use separate screens, rehearse what appears on each one and who controls the scroll.
- Display privacy: Check that desktop capture does not reveal scripts, controls, messages, or unrelated windows.

Common problems and fixes
The prompt appears in the broadcast
Likely cause: OBS is capturing the entire display rather than only the camera, game, or selected application. Fix: Switch to a camera or specific-window/game source where appropriate, then make a private test recording and inspect the output.

The prompt will not stay on top
Likely cause: The browser or device does not support the floating behavior being used. Fix: If using Floating Teleprompter, try desktop Chrome or Edge for its documented floating mode; otherwise use its fullscreen fallback or choose a workflow with a separate screen.
Voice-following scroll feels out of sync
Likely cause: The feature may not suit the microphone selection, pauses, or delivery in your setup. Fix: Select the same microphone in the prompter and OBS where applicable, verify any published hardware requirements, and rehearse with the same script and live scene. Use manual or fixed-speed scrolling if voice-following is unreliable for your delivery.
The prompt distracts from the camera
Likely cause: The window is too wide or too far from the lens. Fix: Narrow it and move it directly below or beside the lens; if that still makes eye-line difficult, consider a physical beamsplitter display.

A remote or second screen does not control the prompt as expected
Likely cause: Remote viewing, remote control, and synchronized multi-screen prompting are different features. Fix: Check that the product explicitly supports the control method you need, then test pairing and scrolling before the live session.
