Recommended Free Tools
For a 1080p60 H.264 YouTube Live stream, start with OBS set to CBR at 17 Mbps, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. For 1080p30, start at 14 Mbps. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom, so the connection must sustain more than the configured stream bitrate, including audio and other network traffic. Test the complete setup with representative gameplay before leaving it unattended; no preset guarantees an uninterrupted overnight broadcast.
“VOD” can mean either the replay YouTube keeps from a live broadcast or a separate recording made on your computer. The settings below are for the live feed. Local recording controls are covered separately so they are not confused with the live bitrate.
Recommended OBS settings for 1080p YouTube Live
Use the following as starting points, then test with the same game, audio, encoder, and network conditions you expect overnight. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists the following recommended and minimum video bitrates; minimum values are not its recommended quality targets.
| Live target | Codec | Recommended video bitrate | Minimum video bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1920Ă—1080 at 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1920Ă—1080 at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1920Ă—1080 at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | Not stated in YouTube’s cited encoder guidance |
| 1920Ă—1080 at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | Not stated in YouTube’s cited encoder guidance |
These are YouTube recommendations, not results from a controlled comparison of gaming footage or a test on a particular PC. Use AV1 or H.265 only if the encoder and the entire delivery path support your chosen codec. Otherwise, H.264 is the straightforward baseline. Source: YouTube encoder settings and bitrates.

Set the video output
- Set the output for a 16:9 1920Ă—1080 image and progressive scan if 1080p is your intended stream. YouTube also lists square pixels among its advanced recommendations.
- Choose 60 fps when smooth fast motion matters and your system and upload connection can sustain it. Choose 30 fps if 60 fps would overload the encoder or network; it is still a valid 1080p target.
- For an SDR workflow, use Rec. 709 color and 8-bit SDR as applicable. The exact OBS labels can vary with the selected output mode and encoder.
Set the live encoder
- Choose CBR rate control for the live feed.
- Enter the bitrate for your frame rate and supported codec from the table above.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Use RTMPS as the transport when configuring the YouTube stream destination.
- For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced recommendations list AAC or MP3, 128 kbps, and a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
These are ingestion settings for a live stream, not universal recommendations for every OBS encoder preset. YouTube’s encoder guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Check upload capacity before choosing 1080p60
Your upload—not download—connection must carry the complete outgoing stream, and other devices or applications may use capacity at the same time. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. As a practical calculation, divide the configured stream bitrate by 0.8 to estimate the minimum upload capacity to aim for before accounting for other traffic. For example, a 17 Mbps video bitrate implies at least 21.25 Mbps of available upload capacity under that 20% rule; audio and competing uploads also need room.

- Measure upload performance under conditions similar to the overnight session, not just when the network is otherwise idle.
- Close or pause other uploads, cloud backups, and downloads that could compete with the stream.
- If upload performance fluctuates or stream health degrades, try 1080p30 or a lower supported bitrate rather than insisting on 1080p60.
- Repeat the test after changing resolution, frame rate, encoder, or network conditions.

Configure the YouTube stream key and test the full path
In OBS, select YouTube as the service in the stream settings and connect or enter the stream key provided in YouTube’s live-stream setup. Interface wording may differ by OBS version and by whether you connect an account or enter a key manually. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on stream or share it. Select RTMPS where the server or transport option is available.

- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast, using the actual game or a representative high-motion scene and the intended audio sources.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and watch for dropped frames, buffering warnings, audio problems, or encoder overload. Change one relevant variable at a time and test again.
- If you also record locally, verify that the recording opens correctly and that its file size continues to grow during the test.
YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and sound, monitoring stream health, and checking local archive files. Its guidance is in Streaming tips.
Plan for an unattended overnight broadcast
A settings preset cannot guarantee that a computer, encoder, network, or YouTube connection will remain healthy all night. Before relying on an unattended stream, run a representative test for long enough to expose problems that appear under sustained load. Check that the stream stays healthy, gameplay and audio remain synchronized, and any local archive remains playable and continues growing.

For a non-interactive overnight broadcast, low latency is usually less important than reliable playback. YouTube defines latency as the delay from capture to playback and notes that lower latency can increase buffering; it also says lower latency matters less when the creator is not interacting with viewers. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep live bitrate separate from local recording quality
If by “VOD” you mean a local OBS recording, its quality controls are separate from the CBR bitrate sent to YouTube. OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, published 2023-11-30, gives recording baselines of NVENC CQP 16–23 or x264 CRF 16–23. It also lists a two-second keyframe interval, NVENC preset P5 and High Quality tuning with two B-frames, and x264’s veryfast preset. OBS says lower CQP or CRF values produce higher quality and larger files. These values describe local recording, not YouTube live ingestion; ensure you have enough disk space for the recording duration.

If you mean the replay YouTube retains from the broadcast, that is distinct from a separate local recording. The cited guidance supports checking local archive integrity, but it does not establish that every creator needs to record locally at the same time.
Troubleshoot common overnight stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream buffers | Upload capacity, competing traffic, or an unstable connection | Check upload rather than download, restore the recommended headroom, pause competing traffic, and retest at a lower frame rate or bitrate if needed. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | Network delivery | Check upload stability and other network use. If Wi-Fi proves unreliable, a wired connection is a reasonable troubleshooting option, but no cable category guarantees a speed improvement. |
| OBS reports encoder overload | Encoding workload or graphics workload | Retest at 30 fps or reduce the workload and confirm the encoder can sustain the chosen output. Do not treat a higher bitrate as a fix for encoder overload. |
| Motion looks less smooth than expected | Frame rate, bitrate, or source/output mismatch | Confirm that the game capture and OBS output are configured for the intended frame rate; then test the recommended bitrate for that target. |
| Audio is absent, distorted, or out of sync | OBS audio source, format, or monitoring setup | Check that the intended desktop and microphone sources are active and test the complete audio path before the broadcast. |
| The local recording stops growing or will not play | Disk space, recording path, or file integrity | Check free storage and the selected save location; test the resulting file before relying on it as an archive. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Service selection, server/transport, or stream key | Recheck the YouTube destination and current key in OBS and YouTube’s live setup. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS. |
