For a standard-dynamic-range retail promo loop, start with OBS set to 1920×1080 at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 5 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, Rec. 709 color, and AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps. Send the feed to YouTube over RTMPS. These settings follow YouTube’s published recommendations for 1080p30 H.264, but they cannot guarantee uninterrupted streaming: a 24/7 channel also needs testing, monitoring, and a recovery plan.
Recommended OBS settings for a retail promo loop
Use this as a starting preset for a mostly static SDR feed with product images, text, transitions, and music or voiceover. YouTube’s published guidance supplies the technical recommendations; test your own scenes and connection before relying on the stream.
| OBS setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920Ă—1080 | A practical source resolution for product images and promotional text. Check text readability on a phone. YouTube can detect resolution and frame rate automatically by default. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Usually sufficient for promotional graphics and ordinary product footage. Use 60 fps only if the motion benefits and your hardware and upload connection can sustain the higher rate. |
| Encoder | H.264 | A broadly supported RTMP/RTMPS choice. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding for live ingest. |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30. It is a platform recommendation, not a measured result for your channel. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and advises not exceeding 4 seconds. OBS notes that a consistent interval helps smooth transitions between transcoded quality options. |
| Audio | AAC, 44.1 kHz, stereo, 128 kbps | YouTube’s advanced recommendations specify these stereo audio settings. Confirm that music and voice have the necessary rights. |
| Color | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR | YouTube’s SDR recommendation. HDR has separate hardware, codec, and configuration requirements and is generally unnecessary for promo graphics. |
| Ingest | RTMPS | YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMPS connection. Treat the stream key as a password. |
| Latency | Normal | Lower latency can increase buffering and is less important for a prerecorded promo loop without viewer interaction. |
| DVR | Choose according to viewer needs | DVR lets viewers pause and resume the live stream. |
YouTube’s other published H.264 bitrate recommendations provide useful context: 720p30 is 3 Mbps, 720p60 is 8 Mbps, 1080p30 is 5 Mbps, and 1080p60 is 17 Mbps. These figures are platform recommendations, not guarantees of visual quality. A move to 1080p60 needs substantially more bitrate than 1080p30, so use it only when the extra motion smoothness is useful and the encoder and connection have headroom. YouTube’s live encoder settings lists the recommended values.
Configure and test the feed before launch
- Set your OBS video output. Use a 1920Ă—1080 output canvas and output resolution at 30 fps for the starting preset. Confirm the promo slate, small text, and product details remain legible on a phone.
- Set the stream encoder. Choose H.264, CBR, 5 Mbps, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Keep the keyframe interval consistent; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Set audio and color. Use AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, with Rec. 709 8-bit SDR. Listen to the actual music and voiceover, not just OBS’s meters, and make sure the audio is licensed for the intended use.
- Connect OBS to YouTube using RTMPS. Enter the stream key from YouTube’s live setup in OBS, and keep it private. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password and address; owners or managers can reset a compromised key, after which the encoder must be updated with the replacement. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- Test with representative content. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Start the encoder well before launch, check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then verify the channel’s watch page on a second device, including a mobile device. YouTube’s guidance suggests setting up an encoder stream at least two hours ahead and starting an encoder at least 15 minutes before an event; for an always-on channel, use that lead time for launch checks and significant changes.
- Check the full playlist. Review transitions, audio levels, slates, and any scheduled changes across the actual loop. A static opening image can look clean while later transitions or audio introduce problems.
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, including the source feed, according to YouTube’s help guidance and the OBS knowledge base. That gives viewers quality choices; it does not compensate for an unstable ingest connection or a poor source. YouTube’s official recommendations and setup guidance are at encoder settings and encoder setup and live-stream tips.

What it takes to keep a YouTube stream running 24/7
OBS can keep sending a feed while the computer and connection are available, but encoder settings alone do not make a channel continuously available. Treat power, internet, the PC, OBS, YouTube ingest, playlist management, and recovery as separate operational dependencies.
Monitor the stream, not only OBS
- Watch OBS for dropped frames and encoding overload.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health panel and listen for missing or distorted audio.
- Confirm the intended promo or playlist is still playing on the public watch page.
- Use ongoing monitoring rather than assuming a successful launch means the stream will stay healthy.
YouTube advises ongoing audio and video quality monitoring. The individual checks above are practical ways to apply that guidance, not a claim that any one monitoring setup guarantees uptime.

Plan for failure and test recovery
If you have a backup encoder or connection, test the actual handoff. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable during a test, then checking whether the player switches to the backup encoder. That is a failover test, not a complete redundancy design: you still need to decide how the backup source, stream key, playlist, and monitoring will work.
A UPS may help keep the PC and network equipment running through a short power interruption. Size it using measured equipment wattage and the runtime you need. It does not solve ISP failure, software crashes, or a YouTube ingest outage.

Make recording and archives a deliberate choice
YouTube recommends checking local archive files and confirming that file size is growing. Its encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted 24-hour archive will be created: plan local recording, segmented files, retention, and any re-stream or restart workflow your operation requires. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Should you use OBS or a cloud service for the loop?
OBS is YouTube-listed, open-source recording and streaming software. YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos, along with other encoder and production options. A directory listing is not an endorsement of a service’s price, suitability, uptime, or partner status. Compare the operating models against your needs:

Copyright and channel-policy checks for retail promos
A technically stable loop is not necessarily cleared to broadcast. Before scheduling a promo, verify that you have rights to every music track, video clip, product image, voiceover, and other creative element for use in a YouTube live stream. Keep documentation of licenses or permissions, and replace material whose rights or permitted use are unclear. YouTube’s copyright safety checklist can help organize a review.
Do not assume that permission to use an asset in an advertisement, on a website, or in a short social post automatically covers continuous live streaming. Check the specific license terms and YouTube’s current policies for the content and channel. This matters especially for third-party music and reused material.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| Stream health reports a weak or unstable connection | Check the encoder’s connection and local network, then test whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. If needed, try the YouTube-recommended 720p30 H.264 rate of 3 Mbps and retest the actual promo. |
| OBS shows dropped frames | Investigate the network path and available upload capacity; reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain the feed. Confirm stream health again after changing settings. |
| OBS reports encoding overload | Check whether the computer can encode the selected resolution and frame rate reliably. Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps or reduce output resolution, then test the full loop before relying on the change. |
| Text or product details are hard to read | Review the source layout and output on a phone. A 1080p output does not make small or low-contrast text readable by itself; revise the creative and test again. |
| Audio is missing or distorted | Check OBS audio routing and levels, confirm the intended source is active, and listen to the YouTube preview and public player. Verify the file itself has the expected audio. |
| The encoder cannot connect after a key change | Confirm OBS is using the current YouTube stream key and RTMPS ingest details. If a key was reset, update the encoder and keep the new key private. |
| The archive is missing or incomplete | Check local recording and file growth, then review YouTube’s archive behavior. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived under YouTube’s setup guidance; plan separately for longer operation. |
| The stream stops during a power or internet interruption | Check the cause before restarting. A UPS only supports power continuity for the equipment it covers; it does not provide a backup ISP or recover a crashed encoder. Test a backup path rather than assuming failover. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can OBS stream a prerecorded retail promo 24/7?
Yes, if the computer, OBS, power, and internet connection remain available and you plan monitoring and recovery. OBS settings by themselves do not guarantee continuous operation.
Should a promo channel use 60 fps?
Only when the motion visibly benefits and your encoder and upload connection can sustain it. YouTube recommends 17 Mbps H.264 for 1080p60, compared with 5 Mbps for 1080p30.
