For a mostly static music stream, start with OBS at 1080p, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and a 5 Mbps video bitrate. Set keyframes to 2 seconds and audio to AAC stereo at 128 Kbps; use RTMPS. These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion settings for 1080p30, not a special OBS preset. Measure sustained upload speed at the streaming location, leave about 20% bandwidth headroom, and test the complete setup before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Recommended OBS settings for a static 24/7 music stream
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution and frame rate | 1920 Ă— 1080 at 30 fps | Suitable for artwork or other visuals with little movement. A static visual does not need 60 fps. |
| Video codec | H.264 | YouTube’s published live-encoder guidance provides H.264 bitrate recommendations for these settings. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingestion. |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps | YouTube’s current guidance, checked in 2026, recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. Its stated range is 5 Mbps minimum to 14 Mbps recommended maximum. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio codec and bitrate | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps | YouTube recommends AAC or MP3; for stereo, its recommended audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. |
| Audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s recommended stereo sample rate. |
| Connection | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS for live delivery. |
| Color, for SDR | Rec. 709, 8-bit | YouTube’s SDR recommendation. |
The 5 Mbps figure is the video bitrate, not the total upload required. Add the audio bitrate and allow network headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room beyond the stream bitrate; shared connections can have less available upload bandwidth than a speed test suggests.
Choose a lower resolution if the connection cannot sustain the target
Test upload capacity at the computer’s actual streaming location and during a time representative of normal network use. If it cannot hold the target reliably with headroom, lower the output resolution and use YouTube’s guidance for that resolution rather than setting a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. For reference, YouTube’s current H.264 guidance for 720p30 is 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. Its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p60 is 10 Mbps, but 60 fps is generally unnecessary for static artwork.
Use OBS’s output and stream settings to match the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, rate control, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. Labels and screen arrangement can vary by OBS version; the values above come from YouTube’s encoder recommendations rather than an OBS-specific preset.

Loop music and visuals in OBS
OBS can repeat local files, but playback looping is separate from keeping the computer, OBS, and internet connection running. Choose the source type according to whether you have one file or a playlist.
Loop one audio or video file
- In OBS, add a Media Source and select the local media file.
- Enable Loop so playback repeats when the file ends.
- Use Restart playback when source becomes active if you want playback to start from the beginning whenever that source becomes active.
- Check the audio meters and listen to a representative section before going live. Confirm that the picture and sound behave as expected at the file’s end and restart.
Loop a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source and add the files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then test transitions and audio levels across the playlist.
Media Source looping and VLC playlist looping repeat playback only. They do not restart OBS, repair a failed internet connection, or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.

Test the stream and plan for failures
Before a long broadcast, test the actual computer, network, audio, and visual setup. YouTube recommends using representative audio and movement, checking the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder. If you record locally, check that the archive file is growing.
- Test at the real location: measure upload speed where the encoder will run and when the network is under typical load. Other devices sharing the connection can reduce available bandwidth.
- Keep headroom: do not plan to use the connection’s full measured upload capacity for the stream.
- Watch stream health: use YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and health messages during the test and broadcast.
- Have a recovery plan: if you use a backup encoder, test the handoff by stopping the primary encoder, as YouTube advises. A looped media source alone is not a failover plan.
Do not rely on YouTube for a complete 24-hour archive
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If retaining the full program matters, make a local recording and plan separate sessions rather than assuming one 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete YouTube archive. Confirm current archive behavior in your channel’s Live Control Room.

Clear music rights before broadcasting
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content. A match does not mean every stream is taken down, but YouTube may replace a live stream with a placeholder warning and may temporarily interrupt or terminate it if the content remains. Its live-stream terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights, including music rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.
A license by itself may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may also need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Before streaming Indian music, confirm that your rights cover the intended livestream, the relevant territories, and any archive or replay, and ask the rights owner about allowlisting where required. Do not assume that a track being available to listen to, or a license for another use, clears it for a YouTube live broadcast.

OBS troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health is unstable or the broadcast drops | Available upload bandwidth is insufficient or varies under load. | Measure upload at the streaming location, leave the recommended headroom, check other network use, and lower resolution or bitrate if needed. Test again while monitoring YouTube’s stream health. |
| Video plays once and stops | Looping is not enabled, or the source type is not configured for the intended playback. | For a single file, check Loop in Media Source. For multiple files, check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source. |
| VLC Video source is unavailable or does not work | VLC may be missing or its architecture may not match OBS. | Install VLC; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS, then reopen or recheck the source. |
| Live stream is interrupted after music begins | YouTube may have detected third-party content; permission or allowlisting may be incomplete. | Review YouTube’s live-stream notice, verify livestream and archive rights with the rights owner, and request Content ID allowlisting where required. |
| The full long broadcast is missing from the archive or cannot be rewound | YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours, and DVR can be limited for streams longer than 12 hours. | Use a local recording if preservation matters, consider separate sessions, and check archive status in Live Control Room. |
| Audio is silent, uneven, or cuts out | The source, file, or levels may be misconfigured. | Check OBS audio meters, listen during a representative test, and confirm the intended source is active and the file plays through its end. |
