For a simple 24/7 fireplace stream, build one OBS scene with a looped local video, then start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a 14 Mbps video bitrate. Those are practical starting points—not guarantees: your encoder and sustained upload connection must be able to maintain them. Test the actual video and audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup.
Build a minimal fireplace scene
A single scene is usually enough for a static relaxation broadcast. Keep the source list lean so there are no accidental overlays, audio sources, or transitions changing the intended picture and sound.
- Create a scene: In OBS, add a scene and give it a recognizable name, such as “Fireplace 24/7.”
- Add the video: In the Sources panel, select + > Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to the local fireplace video.
- Enable looping: In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. Check that playback returns cleanly to the beginning and that the audio does not cut out or spike at the seam.
- Fit the image: Select the source in the preview and use OBS’s fit-to-screen transform, then inspect the preview. Correct cropping, borders, or stretching before going live. Set the canvas and output dimensions to the stream size you intend to send.
- Check audio: Watch the OBS audio meters while the clip plays. Make sure only the intended fireplace audio is active, with no unintended desktop sound, silence, or clipping.
OBS also offers a VLC Video source for playlists. VLC must be installed for that source type to appear. Choose it when the stream needs multiple clips rather than one file, and verify playlist order and loop behavior. OBS documents Loop Playlist as enabled by default for this source type; check the source properties and test clip boundaries before using it continuously.
Set resolution, frame rate, and encoder
For a low-motion fireplace video, 1080p at 30 fps is a sensible first configuration. YouTube’s published guidance gives different bitrate targets by resolution, frame rate, and codec, while OBS notes that 60 fps can place more load on the system than 30 fps. Use 60 fps only if the source benefits from smoother motion and the computer can encode it reliably.

For RTMP or RTMPS delivery, H.264 with CBR is a broadly documented starting configuration. YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 compatibility, but whether either is available depends on your computer and ingest setup. Choose a resolution that matches the source and your available encoding and upload capacity rather than upscaling a low-resolution video without a reason.
Choose bitrate, keyframes, and audio settings
| Setting | Starting point | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 video bitrate, 1080p30 | 14 Mbps, YouTube Help recommendation (accessed 2026; publication date not stated) | Set a CBR target in OBS, then verify that your upload connection can sustain it during a representative test. |
| H.264 video bitrate, 1080p60 | 17 Mbps, YouTube Help recommendation (accessed 2026; publication date not stated) | Use only if 60 fps is appropriate for the source and the encoder and connection sustain the higher load. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | In the output/encoder settings, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; 128 Kbps recommended for stereo by YouTube Help (accessed 2026; publication date not stated) | Use a supported audio format and listen through the loop boundary for abrupt cuts or level changes. |
YouTube describes its bitrate figures as recommendations, not a promise that every connection or encoder will sustain them. Its guidance says to choose a quality your connection can maintain and recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. If the connection is unstable or OBS reports dropped frames, reduce output demands or bitrate and test again.

Configure YouTube delivery and reconnect behavior
Use YouTube’s live-stream setup to obtain the stream key, then enter it in OBS’s stream settings along with the appropriate YouTube service/server selection. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. YouTube recommends RTMPS. A speed test and an OBS test stream help establish whether the chosen settings work on your actual connection.
OBS identifies automatic reconnect as an advanced setting. Confirm it is enabled and choose retry behavior suitable for your system and connection. There is no single retry value established as ideal for every setup. Reconnect helps after an interruption; it does not remove the need to keep the computer, OBS, source file, and network available for a continuous broadcast.

Preflight the stream before leaving it running
- Start a private or otherwise non-public test using the same fireplace video, movement, and audio planned for the broadcast. YouTube specifically recommends testing representative motion and sound.
- While it is live, inspect YouTube’s stream health and any warnings or messages.
- Confirm the Media Source loops smoothly and that the OBS meters show only the intended audio.
- Check OBS for dropped frames. If they rise, reduce output demands or bitrate and retest; dropped frames can indicate the connection cannot keep up with the configured bitrate or is unstable.
- Check the picture in the YouTube preview for crop, black borders, distortion, or overlays that were not intended.
Copyright, reused content, and replay expectations
Use fireplace footage and audio you own or have permission to stream on YouTube. A video being available online does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Music, sound effects, and footage can each have separate rights, so check the license terms for every component and keep documentation of permissions. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules can affect a stream independently of whether OBS settings are correct.
A looped video is not automatically original or eligible for monetization simply because it is being broadcast live. Consider whether you have the rights to the material and whether the channel’s overall content meets YouTube’s applicable policies. YouTube’s archive or replay behavior for streams lasting 24 hours or longer is not established here; do not promise viewers that a continuous stream will produce a complete replay. Check YouTube’s current guidance if an archive is important.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Fireplace video stops at the end | Loop is off, or the wrong source type or file is selected. | Open Media Source properties and enable Loop; test a full pass through the file. |
| Playlist source is unavailable in OBS | VLC is not installed. | Install VLC, restart or reopen OBS if needed, then add a VLC Video source and verify its playlist. |
| Image has borders, is cropped, or looks stretched | Source dimensions and canvas/output aspect ratio do not match, or the source transform is wrong. | Fit the source to the canvas, check crop settings, and inspect the preview at the intended output size. |
| Dropped frames or unstable stream | Upload capacity is insufficient for the bitrate, or the connection is unstable. | Run an upload speed test, lower bitrate or resolution, and retest while watching OBS and YouTube stream health. |
| Encoder overload or choppy motion | Resolution or frame rate is too demanding for the system. | Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps, or reduce resolution and retest with the actual scene. |
| Audio cuts, spikes, or includes unrelated sound | The loop boundary is abrupt, levels clip, or another audio source is active. | Listen through the seam, check OBS meters, remove unintended sources, and adjust the source mix. |
| Stream does not recover after a drop | Automatic reconnect may be disabled or the connection/source has not recovered. | Check OBS’s advanced automatic reconnect setting and retry behavior; confirm the network and source remain available. |
