For a gaming VOD workflow, start with Advanced Scene Switcher for rule-based OBS actions and StreamUP Chapter Marker Manager for logging moments you may want to edit or turn into chapters. Use OBS WebSocket when another app needs to control OBS. None of these steps makes a YouTube chapter automatically: publish chapters by adding compliant timestamps to the video description.
Which OBS tool fits each automation job?
“Best” here means a good fit for the workflow, not a measured performance ranking: there is no head-to-head speed, resource-use, reliability, or usability test behind these recommendations. OBS has three extension routes—plugins, scripts, and WebSocket—and each suits a different kind of task. The OBS Project describes these routes in its Developer Guide.

Set up a maintainable gaming VOD workflow
1. Map the session before automating it
Decide which scenes belong in a typical recording—such as gameplay, an intermission, or a closing screen—and identify the transitions that should happen without intervention. Keep the first pass small: automate a repeated, predictable action rather than building a large set of rules that is difficult to diagnose. A scene change is useful as a chapter cue only if it consistently corresponds to a meaningful edit point.
2. Use Advanced Scene Switcher for repeated OBS actions
Install Advanced Scene Switcher from its OBS resource page, then build macros around the actual trigger and result you want—for example, a rule that switches to a named scene when a specified condition occurs. Its task categories extend beyond scenes to recording and replay-buffer actions, so select only the actions relevant to your workflow and test each macro before relying on it for a full session.

The resource page’s latest update notice shown on October 3, 2026 is August 7, 2026 and states a minimum supported OBS version of 31.1.1. That requirement can change; check the current listing and installer availability for your operating system before updating or installing.
3. Add WebSocket only when an external controller needs it
OBS WebSocket has been included by default since OBS Studio 28, according to the OBS Project’s Remote Control Guide. Enable it when an external app, script, or device needs to control OBS; it is not a prerequisite for every plugin or for making chapters. Set authentication and a password, and treat any network-accessible WebSocket endpoint as a control interface rather than a harmless status page. Check client compatibility and the exact actions it can issue.

4. Mark moments that matter
If remembering timestamps during a long recording is a recurring editing problem, install StreamUP Chapter Marker Manager using its OBS resource page and consult the configuration guide. Add a dock or hotkey marker when something notable happens. Scene-change marking is another option, but exclude scenes that would create noise, and use it only where the transition is genuinely useful. Export the marker data into your post-production process.
The resource page shows a minimum OBS version of 28.0.0 and a latest update date of April 14, 2026, as listed on October 3, 2026. Verify the live listing for changes. Embedding markers depends on compatible OBS and recording-format conditions; consult the plugin documentation for the format you use. Treat markers as editing notes until you deliberately convert them into YouTube’s description format.

5. Add and validate YouTube chapters
In YouTube Studio, edit the gaming video and add a timestamp-and-title list to its description. YouTube’s Video chapters help page sets these requirements for creator-added chapters:
- The first timestamp is 00:00.
- There are at least three timestamps in ascending order.
- Each chapter lasts at least 10 seconds.
For example, a description can begin with 00:00 Opening, followed by later timestamps and concise titles in time order. Check the timestamp values against the final edited video: cuts or inserted footage can make markers from the original recording inaccurate. If your channel does not yet have chapter access, YouTube says manual chapters require access to advanced features. Automatic chapters have separate eligibility limits; not every video qualifies, and eligibility does not guarantee they will appear. Manual description chapters override automatic chapters.

Plugin, script, WebSocket client, or Stream Deck?
These are related but distinct ways to extend or control OBS, not interchangeable names for one feature.
- Plugin: A compiled extension integrated with OBS. OBS notes that compiled plugins may need recompilation after OBS changes, so check compatibility before updating OBS.
- Script: An OBS automation route using Python or Lua. Scripts are generally more resilient to minor API changes, though less performant; OBS says performance is usually not an issue in most cases.
- WebSocket client: An external application or script that communicates with OBS over WebSocket. It can be useful for a custom control surface or automation outside OBS, with security and compatibility considered.
- Stream Deck: An optional physical controller for triggering compatible actions. StreamUP lists Stream Deck among compatible OBS WebSocket automation tools in its plugin documentation. You do not need one to use Advanced Scene Switcher or create YouTube chapters.
Troubleshooting common workflow problems
A plugin will not install or load
- Compare your installed OBS version with the plugin’s current minimum version and confirm you downloaded an installer for your operating system.
- If OBS was recently updated, check whether the plugin release supports that OBS build. Compiled plugins may require updates or recompilation after OBS changes.
- For Chapter Marker Manager, also check the recording container and marker output mode if embedded markers are missing.
A macro does not fire or performs the wrong action
- Verify the trigger and action in the installed Advanced Scene Switcher release, then test them in a short recording or controlled session.
- Check scene names and conditions against the current OBS setup. Remove rules that are redundant or whose trigger is ambiguous.
- Confirm whether the action depends on WebSocket or another external client, and that the client is connected and authorized.
A WebSocket client cannot connect—or the endpoint is exposed
- Confirm WebSocket is enabled in OBS and that the client supports your OBS version and the action you want.
- Check the authentication settings and password on both ends of the connection.
- Restrict network exposure to the access the controller needs; do not leave a control endpoint available on an untrusted network.
Markers do not become visible YouTube chapters
- Exported or embedded OBS markers are not a substitute for the timestamp list in the YouTube description.
- Check for 00:00, at least three timestamps in ascending order, and a minimum 10-second chapter length.
- Verify that timestamps match the final edit and that the channel has access to advanced features if it needs chapter access.
