Advanced Scene Switcher is the best OBS plugin to investigate for automating scene changes around prerecorded video. Pair it with OBS’s built-in Media Source for one file, or VLC Video for a playlist. But OBS playback, scene automation, and YouTube’s live-event controls are separate layers: YouTube’s published encoder workflow includes a manual Go live confirmation, so test the complete handoff before relying on a broadcast to run unattended.
Which OBS plugin should you use?
Start with Advanced Scene Switcher if the job is to automate OBS scene or source actions—for example, switch away from a prerecorded video when playback ends. The OBS community plugin directory identifies it as an automation tool, and an OBS forum discussion describes using it for an end-of-video scene switch. That example is a community-reported configuration, not an official, independently tested walkthrough; controls may differ by plugin release.
The plugin automates actions inside OBS. It does not, by itself, schedule a YouTube event or establish that YouTube will start and end the event without an operator. Treat playback, OBS automation, and YouTube’s event lifecycle as distinct tasks.
Set up video playback in OBS
For one prerecorded video: Media Source
Add a Media Source to the scene that will show the video. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes settings that affect what happens when a source becomes visible, including restarting playback on activation. Choose restart or continuation behavior deliberately: it changes what viewers see if you switch away from the source and later return. Confirm the file path and test playback before scheduling the event.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a playlist: VLC Video
Use VLC Video when you need a playlist rather than one file. VLC must be installed, and OBS documents loop and shuffle controls for this source. Decide whether the playlist should repeat, whether its order should be randomized, and what scene should appear when playback ends if looping is off.
These sources handle playback; they do not schedule a YouTube event or send the encoder’s final platform-side start and stop commands.

Configure scene automation with Advanced Scene Switcher
- Check compatibility first. Match the current Advanced Scene Switcher release notes to your operating system, CPU architecture, and OBS Studio build. OBS notes that plugin support can vary across those combinations. Back up a working OBS configuration before installing or changing a plugin.
- Install the plugin using its current instructions. Use the plugin’s current guide and release notes for installation and configuration details; do not assume a community example describes the controls in every version.
- Choose the trigger that matches the intended change. Decide whether the automation should respond to a schedule or time condition, source visibility, media playback state, or an external command. Configure the action to switch scenes or change source visibility as required. The exact available conditions and actions depend on the installed release.
- Keep stream control separate. A scene change is not the same as starting or stopping an OBS stream, and neither necessarily starts or ends the YouTube event. Verify each action at its own layer.
- Rehearse the whole sequence. Test scheduled start, playback, end-of-file behavior, looping, scene changes, OBS restart, missing media, and connection loss before depending on automation for a public broadcast.
Schedule and start the YouTube live event
Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio/Live Control Room, then connect OBS using that event’s stream URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow: wait for the stream preview and complete the live handoff. The published instructions include clicking Go live. They also describe ending the event and stopping encoder content; streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Because the documented workflow includes operator actions, do not assume a scheduled OBS scene switch also triggers YouTube’s event start or end. Check the event’s current auto-start and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room and verify their behavior in a rehearsal before planning an unattended start or shutdown.

Other ways to automate OBS
Python or Lua scripts
OBS supports Python and Lua scripting. A script can complement a plugin when a custom condition or action is needed, but OBS warns that a poorly written script can leak memory or crash the application. Use scripts only if you can maintain them and test their behavior through a full stream cycle.
WebSocket and external control
OBS’s Remote Control Guide, dated 2023-04-18, says WebSocket integration is included by default with OBS Studio 28 and above. A software client can control OBS scenes and sources; the guide recommends password protection for WebSocket. This is an OBS control interface, not evidence that an external client automatically completes YouTube’s event lifecycle.

Optional physical control
OBS’s Plugins Guide names Elgato Stream Deck as an example of hardware integration. A control deck can be useful for physical or manual control, but it is not required for a scheduled workflow and does not remove the need to verify YouTube’s event handoff.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose an automation approach
| Need | Approach | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Play one local file | OBS Media Source | Does not schedule the YouTube event or ensure an automatic scene change. |
| Play a playlist | OBS VLC Video, with VLC installed | Does not start or end the YouTube event. |
| Change scenes or sources based on conditions | Advanced Scene Switcher; check its current guide and compatibility | A community example does not prove identical controls across versions or control YouTube’s event lifecycle. |
| Custom OBS-specific behavior | Python/Lua scripting or a WebSocket client | These control OBS; they do not, by themselves, prove an unattended YouTube handoff. |
Before choosing, identify the trigger you need (time, visibility, playback state, or external command), the action (scene change, source visibility, playback, or stream control), and who or what handles YouTube’s event start and end. Also account for compatibility, recovery after a missed trigger or restart, and whether a file or connection might fail.

Troubleshoot common automation failures
- The video does not appear: Confirm the Media Source points to an available file and is in the active scene. Check the source’s visibility and restart-on-activation settings.
- A playlist will not play: Confirm VLC is installed and the VLC Video source contains the intended playlist. Check its loop and shuffle settings.
- The next scene never appears: Check that the plugin is installed for the current OBS platform and build, and that the configured trigger matches the actual playback or visibility behavior. Rehearse the end-of-file condition; do not assume the forum example’s controls match your version.
- OBS changes scenes but YouTube is not live: Scene automation does not equal the YouTube event handoff. Check the stream key and event connection, wait for preview, and follow the current Live Control Room workflow.
- The sequence breaks after restart or a dropped connection: Test OBS restart, unavailable media, and connection loss as separate failure cases. Confirm what the plugin and YouTube event do afterward before relying on unattended operation.
- OBS becomes unstable after adding automation: Revert recent plugin or script changes and restore the saved configuration. If using a script, review it for errors; OBS warns that poorly written scripts can leak memory or crash OBS.
