There is no OBS preset validated specifically for a 24/7 sleep-sounds stream. Choose filters only to address a problem in your audio: use noise suppression for mild unwanted noise, compression for occasional loud peaks, and a limiter for peak control. Be cautious with gates and expanders, which reduce quiet audio—the very detail a continuous ambient track may depend on.

Choose filters by what your source actually needs

First identify the source carrying the sleep audio: it may be a media source, captured device, or another audio source in your scene. OBS lets you add filters to individual sources or audio devices, so apply processing where the sound enters rather than adding the same chain indiscriminately.

A stable ambient track may need no processing. Each filter changes the signal, and OBS does not publish a sleep-audio-specific preset or test results. Listen to the processed output before deciding a filter helps.

Filter Use it when Watch for
Noise suppression The source has mild background or white noise. It may alter wanted sound; OBS warns that stronger Speex suppression can distort other sounds.
Noise gate You want to cut background sound below a threshold, particularly when a voice source is not active. It can cut quiet passages in continuous ambience.
Expander You want to reduce signal below a threshold with a potentially smoother transition than a gate. It also reduces quiet signal and may change the ambient bed.
Compressor The source has occasional loud excursions above a threshold. It may be unnecessary on consistently leveled audio.
Limiter You want to cap peaks to help prevent clipping and distortion. A peak ceiling is not a complete loudness target.

What each OBS filter does—and when to use it

Noise suppression: for mild, audible noise

OBS describes Noise Suppression as a way to remove mild background or white noise, such as computer-fan noise. Its guide says it is generally not effective against large amounts of background noise. The default method is RNNoise; OBS characterizes it as higher quality than Speex but more CPU-intensive. That is OBS’s general description, not a quantified benchmark or a sleep-audio comparison.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you enable suppression, compare the filtered sound with the original, including quiet portions. Keep it only if the unwanted noise is reduced without an unacceptable change to the wanted ambience. OBS specifically warns that stronger Speex suppression can distort other sounds.

Noise gate: usually a risky fit for a continuous sound bed

A gate cuts off audio below its threshold. OBS frames it as a way to cut background noise when someone is not speaking, with separate open and close thresholds. A sleep track may have intentionally quiet passages, so a gate can suppress sound you meant to keep. Do not copy voice-oriented settings without listening to the quietest parts.

OBS’s documented defaults are a close threshold of -32 dB, open threshold of -26 dB, attack of 25 ms, hold of 200 ms, and release of 150 ms. These are software defaults, not validated sleep-stream settings.

Expander: gentler threshold-based reduction, still capable of thinning ambience

An expander reduces signal below a threshold; unlike a fixed gate, its adjustable ratio can make the opening and closing smoother. OBS places it after compression or other effects and before a limiter. Its documented defaults include a 2:1 ratio and a -40 dB threshold, with attack of 5–10 ms and release of 50–120 ms described as recommended starting ranges. These values have not been established as suitable for sleep sounds. Listen through quiet transitions before keeping the filter.

Compressor: for occasional loud sections

A compressor reduces levels above its threshold. OBS describes it as useful when a source—typically a microphone—sometimes becomes much louder, and places it near the beginning of a filter chain. For a consistently leveled ambient recording without loud excursions, the official documentation does not establish that compression is needed.

OBS’s documented defaults are a 10:1 ratio, -18 dB threshold, 6 ms attack, and 60 ms release. Treat them as software defaults, not a recommended sleep-audio preset.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Limiter: keep it last when you use one

A limiter caps signal peaks at its threshold to help prevent clipping and distortion. OBS says it should be the last filter in the chain. Its documented defaults are a -6 dB threshold and 60 ms release; those are defaults, not a proven target for sleep content. Set a ceiling appropriate to your intended output, then verify the loudest sections.

Build and check a filter chain

There is no universal order for every filter in a sleep-sounds setup. OBS’s placement guidance supports a compressor near the beginning if needed, an expander after compression or other effects, and a limiter last. Consider suppression only when mild noise is actually present. A gate or expander should earn its place through listening, not simply because it is available.

  1. Find the audio source. In OBS, locate the scene source or audio device that produces the sleep track. Open that source’s filters and add processing there.
  2. Listen to the unfiltered source first. Note any specific problem—background noise, abrupt loud peaks, or unwanted low-level sound. If none is apparent, start without filters.
  3. Add only the relevant filter. For mild noise, try Noise Suppression. For occasional loud excursions, consider a Compressor. Use a gate or Expander only if reducing quiet signal is acceptable. Add a Limiter last if you need a peak ceiling.
  4. Audition quiet and loud sections. Check the quietest passages for missing ambience or abrupt changes, and the loudest sections for peaks and distortion. Compare with the unfiltered source.
  5. Test the complete scene and stream before launch. Confirm the intended source is audible and the scene behaves as expected. OBS recommends testing stream operation, but its overview does not specify a 24-hour endurance test or promise uptime.

Troubleshoot common audio problems

  • Quiet ambience disappears or pulses: A gate or expander may be reducing it below the threshold. Disable that filter or adjust it cautiously, then replay the quietest passage.
  • The sound is muffled or altered after suppression: Suppression may be acting on wanted content, or Speex suppression may be too strong. Reduce or remove it and compare the result; suppression is intended for mild noise.
  • Peaks distort: Check the loudest portion and whether it exceeds the output’s available headroom. A limiter can cap peaks, but it does not replace setting an appropriate overall level.
  • The filter seems to do nothing: Check that you added it to the source or device that actually carries the audio, and that the filter is enabled.
  • The stream has an interruption: Audio filters address signal processing, not delivery reliability. The OBS overview cited here does not claim that a filter prevents stream interruptions.

Keep OBS running yourself, or run the stream in the cloud

For a do-it-yourself OBS setup, the configured scene and audio processing run on the computer hosting OBS. Test the full stream before relying on it; the cited OBS guidance does not establish a 24-hour endurance procedure or uptime guarantee.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For a sleep-sounds stream built from recordings, that is an alternative to leaving a computer running; it does not process or broadcast a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
