For a YouTube relay, start with RTMPS where supported, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds). Choose the bitrate for the encoder’s codec, resolution, and frame rate—and make sure the sending connection can sustain it. NGINX relays the incoming stream; it does not make an incompatible encoder output compliant or guarantee uninterrupted service.
Recommended YouTube encoder settings
These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not settings that can be applied universally to every encoder or NGINX build. Set codec, bitrate, keyframes, and audio in the encoder that creates the stream. NGINX’s role is to receive and relay it.
| Setting | Baseline | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS when supported | YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection through to Google’s servers. Confirm that the encoder and relay path support it. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 where supported | YouTube lists these codecs for RTMP/RTMPS. Your encoder must actually be able to emit the selected codec; do not assume the NGINX module transcodes video. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR | Use a steady target bitrate that the sending connection can reliably sustain. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Set this in the encoder. NGINX relay directives do not correct the encoder’s keyframe cadence. |
These protocol, codec, CBR, and keyframe recommendations come from YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Choose a bitrate that matches the stream
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. Use the matching row rather than treating any one figure as a universal target.

| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s published guidance, not independent measurements or guarantees of quality. They apply to the listed H.264 combinations; do not transfer them unchanged to another codec or output format. Test the available upload bitrate and choose a level that remains reliable on your connection. A 24/7 stream has to sustain its outbound traffic continuously, so a bitrate that works only during a short test is a poor operating target. See YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for other codec and resolution combinations.
Audio and picture settings to verify
For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3, with 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps. For 5.1 surround, it lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. AAC is required for RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 surround. Match the audio configuration to the material and encoder rather than changing it in NGINX.

Confirm that your NGINX build has the RTMP module
NGINX does not necessarily include RTMP support in every installation. Module installation depends on whether you run NGINX Plus or NGINX Open Source, your operating system and package source, and the module build. Establish those details before copying a package name or configuration snippet.

NGINX Plus
F5’s documented NGINX Plus procedure uses the compatible nginx-plus-module-rtmp package, loads ngx_rtmp_module.so in the main context, validates the configuration with nginx -t, and reloads NGINX. These steps are specific to the documented NGINX Plus context; confirm compatibility with your installed version and platform. Follow the NGINX RTMP module guide.
NGINX Open Source
The Open Source installation guide describes compiling third-party modules statically with --add-module or dynamically with --add-dynamic-module, where supported. This is not the same as installing the NGINX Plus package. Check the build and module compatibility for your operating system before compiling or loading anything. See NGINX Open Source installation guidance.

Keep the relay configuration focused
For a YouTube destination, configure the installed RTMP module to receive the encoder’s stream and relay it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint using the appropriate stream key and secure protocol where supported. The exact directives and configuration depend on the module and deployment; there is no version-independent NGINX snippet in the available official guidance that guarantees a 24/7 relay. Validate changes with the checks appropriate to your NGINX build before applying them.
HLS directives such as fragment length, playlist length, playlist type, and output path matter only if your server also packages a local HLS output. They are not prerequisites just because the destination is YouTube Live. The community-maintained nginx-rtmp directives reference describes such options; verify each directive against the exact module version you run.

Preflight and ongoing checks for a 24/7 stream
- Verify the build: identify the NGINX edition, version, operating system, package source, and RTMP module compatibility.
- Check encoder output: confirm protocol, codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings at the encoder.
- Test representative content: before launch, test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. A static picture or silent test may not expose problems that appear in the actual program.
- Watch YouTube stream health: monitor the health indicators and messages after going live; a configuration that passes a syntax check can still have ingest or content issues.
- Plan recovery and monitoring: decide who or what will detect an interrupted relay and how it will be restored. Exact retry and failover behavior depends on the deployed NGINX module, encoder, and infrastructure; the cited guidance does not establish universal retry values or a 24/7 uptime guarantee.
YouTube explicitly advises testing before starting and reviewing stream health during operation. Its encoder guidance does not prescribe an NGINX-specific uptime configuration.
Troubleshooting common failures
- NGINX rejects the configuration or cannot load the module: the module may be missing, incompatible with the installed build, or loaded in the wrong context. Verify edition, build, package source, and module compatibility; then validate with the procedure for that installation.
- YouTube reports poor or unstable ingest: check whether the configured bitrate is appropriate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate, and whether the sender can sustain it. Test a lower suitable output level if the connection cannot reliably maintain the chosen rate.
- The stream is rejected or behaves unexpectedly despite a working relay: inspect the encoder’s codec, protocol, CBR mode, and keyframe interval. NGINX relaying does not correct incompatible encoder output.
- Audio is missing or unsuitable: check the encoder’s audio codec, sample rate, bitrate, and channel configuration against the intended stereo or 5.1 output.
- The stream drops after launch: review YouTube’s stream-health messages and your relay and network monitoring. The sources do not establish a universal NGINX retry directive or failover recipe; check the documentation for the exact module and encoder versions you deployed.
- Local HLS output is missing: only if you configured HLS, check the relevant module’s HLS directives and output path against the deployed version. HLS packaging is separate from sending a YouTube ingest stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the channel to stay live without maintaining your own NGINX relay, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
