There is no single, objective ranking of the best new musicians of 2025. For a useful shortlist, this guide treats “new” as artists whose audience or critical profile grew substantially during the year, and separates measured streaming breakouts from editorial picks and early-year predictions. The clearest year-end breakout list names Myles Smith, Alex Warren, Zach Top, Leon Thomas, and Lola Young at the top; other artists worth sampling include Gigi Perez and Hudson Westbrook.

How to read “best new musicians” lists

“New” can mean a debut-era artist, a musician with a newly compelling release, or an established performer whose audience or reputation has taken a step forward. The lists below use different definitions and answer different questions, so their names should not be treated as one shared ranking.

  • Measured year-end breakout: SoundExchange’s 2025 Breakout Creators list draws on non-interactive streaming data from more than 3,000 digital service providers. Its measurement window ran from December 1, 2024, through November 30, 2025. This is evidence of traction on the services covered, not a verdict on artistic merit or all listening. SoundExchange’s year-end lists.
  • Critic and editor selection: Stereogum’s “40 Best New Artists Of 2025” is alphabetical, not ranked. Its editors considered new releases they had revisited since the prior fall, and explicitly allow “new” to include a debut album, a major step up on a second album, or an artist newly signed after years of work. Stereogum’s list.
  • Forecasts and watchlists: Spotify’s January 27, 2025, Artists To Watch list and GRAMMY.com’s 25-artist selection were forward-looking discovery guides. They point to artists editors expected to rise; they are not year-end measurements.
  • Emerging-artist eligibility: NME’s 2025 list contains 100 artists in alphabetical order and excludes artists who had released a debut studio album before publication. Its scope includes indie, R&B, rap, digicore, post-punk, shoegaze, metal, electronic, soul, and idol music.

For a compact set of listening leads, repeated appearances across lists are useful signals of attention, but not proof of an objective ranking. SoundExchange, Spotify, and editorial publications differ in timing, geography, eligibility, and method.

Year-end breakouts: the clearest measured cohort

SoundExchange’s list offers the most explicit year-end measurement in the available sources: non-interactive streaming data for December 1, 2024–November 30, 2025, from more than 3,000 digital service providers. Its first five are:

  1. Myles Smith — No. 1 on the Breakout Creators list. “Stargazing” also placed No. 2 on SoundExchange’s 2025 Top Tracks list.
  2. Alex Warren — No. 2 on the Breakout Creators list.
  3. Zach Top — No. 3; he also appeared in Spotify’s country watchlist.
  4. Leon Thomas — No. 4 on the Breakout Creators list.
  5. Lola Young — No. 5. SoundExchange associates her breakout with “Messy,” which ranked No. 14 on its 2025 Top Tracks list; she also appeared in Spotify and GRAMMY.com watchlists.

The list identifies creators who gained traction through strong debuts or career-highlight releases reaching wider audiences. It does not compare artistic quality, count every form of listening, or establish a comprehensive popularity ranking across music platforms. See SoundExchange’s list and methodology context.

More artists to put on a listening shortlist

These names recur across different kinds of lists or have a specific listening lead in the sources. The evidence column makes clear whether the signal is a measured year-end breakout, a watchlist appearance, or editorial context.

Artist Listening lead What the 2025 evidence shows
Gigi Perez “Fable” Included in SoundExchange’s breakout creators and Spotify’s indie/folk watchlist.
Hudson Westbrook “House Again” Included in SoundExchange’s breakout creators and Spotify’s country watchlist.
Ami Taf Ra The Prophet And The Madman Stereogum’s editorial selection notes the album as a debut.
Asher White 8 Tips For Full Catastrophe Living Stereogum’s editorial selection describes it as her Joyful Noise debut.
Qing Madi “Goosebumps” Named by Spotify as an essential track in its Artists To Watch feature.
Cameron Whitcomb “Quitter” Named by Spotify as an essential track in its Artists To Watch feature.

Spotify said its companion Artists To Watch playlist contained 35 tracks, one essential-track selection per featured artist. That makes the playlist a practical way to sample its roster, while the individual tracks above give a place to start. The list is a discovery feature rather than a retrospective measure of who broke out by year’s end. Spotify’s Artists To Watch feature.

Which list should you use?

  • Want evidence of a year-end streaming breakout? Start with SoundExchange’s top five, keeping its non-interactive streaming scope and stated measurement period in mind.
  • Want editors’ picks that may include artists with years of work behind them? Browse Stereogum’s alphabetical list; its definition of “new” is deliberately broad.
  • Want a genre-spanning discovery playlist? Spotify’s Artists To Watch feature pairs artists with essential tracks and a 35-track companion playlist.
  • Want a list framed around emerging-artist eligibility? NME’s 100-artist selection is alphabetical and applies its own debut-album cutoff.

For comparing artists across genres, consider sound, the track or release you want to try first, and the type of evidence behind the recommendation. Those are more useful choices than forcing unrelated musicians into a single ranking.

How to sample the artists

  1. Choose a starting point by sound: begin with one of the named tracks—such as “Messy,” “Stargazing,” “Fable,” or “House Again”—or select an album mentioned in Stereogum’s coverage.
  2. Use the originating list for context: Spotify’s feature provides essential-track selections and its companion playlist; Stereogum links its editorial selections to listening platforms.
  3. Decide what “new” means for your own search: a streaming breakout, a first major release, or a strong critical reception will lead to different discoveries.

Specific regional access and current availability on individual listening services are not established here, so check the service you use for the track or album.
