The best music to listen to while walking is music you enjoy at a beat that feels comfortable for your pace. A steady rhythm can help some people find or maintain a cadence, but no genre, song, or beats-per-minute setting is best for everyone. Try a few tempos and styles, then keep what makes your walk feel right.
How music can shape a walk
Music can do more than fill silence: its beat may give your steps a rhythm to follow, and it can make walking feel more engaging. In one experiment, participants walked faster with music than with metronome stimuli spanning 50 to 190 beats per minute. That finding describes the experiment’s conditions, not a universal effect or a recommendation to walk faster. The study is indexed by PubMed.
A 2024 study of 23 adults comparing walking cadence aids found that music produced higher relative activity intensity than comparison conditions and higher positive affect than general guidelines alone. Participants varied in how well they used the cue, so music may help some walkers more than others. The study is indexed by PubMed.
How to choose music for your walking pace
Start with your natural walking rhythm rather than chasing a number. Notice whether a song’s beat feels easy to follow, then choose music that supports the pace you want without making the walk uncomfortable.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- For a relaxed walk: Choose a beat and mood that let you settle into an unhurried rhythm.
- For a brisk walk: Try a clearer or somewhat quicker beat if it helps you sustain your chosen pace. Slow down if you find yourself straining to keep up.
- For focus: Instrumental music may suit you if lyrics distract you; familiar songs may be easier to follow than unfamiliar ones. These are preference-based options, not experimentally established rankings.
- For variety: Mix music with quieter stretches or other listening choices if that makes the walk more enjoyable.
If you want to test a specific cadence, compare how a few songs feel against your ordinary steps. In a study of 20 healthy adults, researchers tested one commercial song at 80, 100, and 125 beats per minute. During the 100-beats-per-minute trial, 90% of participants reached at least 3 metabolic equivalents. This was a small, specific study—not evidence that 100 beats per minute is best for every walker. The study is indexed by PubMed.
Is music better than podcasts or silence?
That depends on what you want from the walk. Music offers a beat you can use as a cadence cue; a podcast offers spoken content but no consistent step rhythm; silence leaves you more space to notice your surroundings. A Reddit walking discussion captures the kinds of choices people ask about—music, podcasts, or nothing—but it is anecdotal, not a survey of walkers’ preferences. Read the discussion.

Headphones, outdoor awareness, and safety
Headphones and earbuds are optional. If you listen outdoors, choose a setup and volume that still let you stay aware of nearby sounds and activity; the best choice depends on the route and your comfort. A small feasibility study involving people with Parkinson’s disease let participants choose earbuds or headphones for comfort, but it did not compare the safety of headphone products. Read the study.
Do not assume that music-guided movement is risk-free. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that music interventions involving movement can lead to injury if suitable safety precautions are not taken. Evidence about gait-related benefits in Parkinson’s disease is condition-specific and should not be treated as proof of the same effects for every healthy walker. NCCIH’s overview.

A simple way to build a walking playlist
- Pick the walk’s purpose. Decide whether you want a relaxed stroll, a steady everyday pace, or a brisker walk.
- Choose a few candidates. Include songs you enjoy with beats that seem compatible with that pace; try both lyrical and instrumental tracks if you are unsure.
- Test them on a comfortable walk. Notice whether you naturally match your steps to the beat and whether that feels pleasant rather than forced.
- Adjust or skip. Change the tempo or style if a song pulls you into an uncomfortable pace, and leave it out if it distracts you.
- Revisit the playlist for the setting. Choose a listening approach that suits the route and leaves you able to attend to your surroundings.
