DaVinci Resolve is the strongest default for most gaming-video creators who want a capable desktop editor on Windows, macOS, or Linux. It brings editing, color, effects, motion graphics, and audio post-production into one application. It is not universally best: Adobe-based teams may prefer Premiere, Mac-only editors may want to evaluate Final Cut Pro, and creators focused on fast vertical highlights may get more value from a short-form-oriented tool such as CapCut.
The right choice depends on the montage you want to make and how your actual computer handles your gameplay footage—not on a “pro” label or a feature list alone.
Which editor should you choose?
| Editor | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| DaVinci Resolve | Creators who want an all-in-one desktop editor across Windows, macOS, or Linux. | It combines editing, color, effects, motion graphics, and audio post-production. Check current requirements and feature availability for your setup at Blackmagic Design. |
| Adobe Premiere | Creators already using Adobe tools or working with a team. | Its fit depends on your existing workflow and collaboration needs. Confirm current plan costs and technical requirements for your region before subscribing at Adobe. |
| Final Cut Pro | Mac-only creators who want to evaluate an editor within that platform. | Confirm current compatibility, license terms, and features at Apple. |
| CapCut | Creators whose priority is quick, short-form vertical highlights. | Templates, captions, reframing, and turnaround may matter more here than deep media management. Check current platform availability and feature limits before choosing; those details can vary. |
This is a workflow-based recommendation, not a claim that one editor wins every task. A gaming-editor comparison published by TechYorker on September 6, 2026 mapped these tools to different creator needs and noted that its price and feature checks were made August 16, 2026. Treat that mapping as editorial guidance; verify current vendor terms before committing.
What makes an editor good for gaming montages?
Montage editing is about controlling rhythm and clarity. Compare the controls you will actually use, rather than choosing by broad labels such as “professional.”

- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
- Keyframes and speed changes: Look for control over motion and timing, including speed ramps for emphasizing a play or transitioning between moments.
- Beat-aware cutting: A timeline that makes it easy to place cuts against music beats helps shape pacing, but the editor will not choose the right rhythm for you.
- Masking and tracking: These can isolate a subject, follow an element, or support targeted effects.
- Animated text and captions: Useful for player names, context, callouts, and vertical clips that need to work without sound.
- Slow motion: Check how the editor handles your recorded frame rate and whether the result looks smooth at the intended delivery frame rate.
- Audio mixing: Make sure you can handle game audio, microphone, chat, and music as separate tracks when your capture workflow provides them.
- Output formats: Confirm that the workflow suits both landscape videos and vertical social edits if you publish in both formats.
- Project handoff and learning curve: Consider whether collaborators use the same editor and how much time you can spend learning its timeline and media tools.
The footage, cut timing, sound mix, and effects choices matter at least as much as the software. An editor supplies control; it does not automatically make a montage compelling.
Will your computer edit gameplay footage smoothly?
A gaming PC is not automatically a smooth editing workstation. Playback depends on the footage’s codec, resolution, frame rate, hardware decoding support, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and timeline settings. Two recordings from the same computer can behave differently if they use different recording formats or settings.

Test with your own recordings
- Choose a representative clip: use the resolution, frame rate, and recording format you normally capture, including a clip with fast action and complex audio if possible.
- Import it into the editor you are considering and scrub, play, trim, and add a basic effect or title.
- Check whether playback and seeking feel usable. A short trial with representative media is more informative than assuming that a powerful graphics card guarantees smooth editing.
- If playback is choppy, test the editor’s timeline or proxy workflow and check its current hardware and codec requirements before changing your capture setup.
Copying recordings to fast storage can help keep a project organized and preserve originals. An external SSD is optional, not a universal requirement; the appropriate drive and capacity depend on your footage and computer.

- Preserve the originals. Keep source recordings unchanged and make a working copy for the project. Use folders or clear filenames to separate sessions, highlights, audio, graphics, and exports.
- Select the moments. Review the recordings and mark the plays, reactions, and transitions that contribute to the story. Remove long stretches that do not add context or momentum.
- Assemble the sequence. Build the main cut first. Shape its rhythm with trims, keyframes, and speed changes, then consider beat-matched cuts where they serve the edit.
- Mix the audio. Balance game sound, microphone, chat, and music on separate tracks where available. Check that effects and music do not make speech or important gameplay cues hard to hear.
- Add effects and graphics deliberately. Use masking, tracking, slow motion, and animated text to clarify or emphasize a moment; avoid effects that obscure the action.
- Set the delivery format. Choose landscape or vertical framing, resolution, and frame rate to suit the destination and source footage. Review reframing and captions carefully, especially for vertical edits.
- Export and inspect the file. Watch the rendered video—not just the timeline—to catch cut, audio, framing, or sync problems before publishing.
Fix common editing problems
- Choppy preview: The source codec, resolution, or frame rate may be demanding for the system or timeline settings. Test proxy or timeline options and check the editor’s current requirements with your representative footage.
- Audio drifting out of sync: Variable-frame-rate footage or recordings from separate capture sources can cause sync trouble. Inspect the export; if the problem persists, try a constant-frame-rate intermediate and check the result again.
- Vertical crop loses the action: Reframing a landscape recording is not automatic composition. Review the crop throughout the clip and reposition it so the key gameplay remains visible.
- Music overwhelms gameplay or speech: Rebalance the separate audio tracks and listen to the export at a normal playback level, not only while editing.
- Project media goes missing: Keep originals and project media organized, and avoid moving or renaming files after import unless you can relink them in the editor.
Check rights before publishing a montage
Music, game footage, and other included material can be subject to copyright or platform rules. Using a song in an edit does not by itself establish that you have permission to publish it. Check the rights for every element you did not create or license, and review the applicable platform rules before uploading. Editing software cannot make copyrighted material safe to use.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel that loops prerecorded gameplay or other uploaded videos, that is a separate job from editing a montage. StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
