There is no single best mid-range bass for every player. Start with your budget and what you need the instrument to do, then compare sound, neck feel, scale, balance, and setup. The examples below are reference points—not a universal ranking—and their prices are dated snapshots rather than guaranteed current offers.

What counts as a mid-range bass guitar?

“Mid-range” is not a fixed price category across countries, currencies, or retailers. For a useful comparison, define your own ceiling in your local currency and compare instruments available in your market at that time. The examples here use US-dollar listings from Guitar Center’s 2026 guide, alongside publication-era international reference prices for one Yamaha model; none should be treated as a current quote.

Yamaha’s Guide to Choosing a Bass Guitar advises: “Bass guitars vary widely in quality and price, so before you start looking, determine how you intend to use the instrument and what your budget is.” That is a practical starting point: set a spend limit, then identify whether you mainly need a dependable practice instrument, a bass for rehearsals and gigs, a particular sound, or an extra string range.

How to compare basses that fit your budget

Sound and controls

Pickup layout shapes a bass’s tonal character, while active or passive electronics affect how you control that sound. Consider whether you prefer straightforward controls or onboard EQ flexibility, and whether the instrument’s published pickup and control configuration suits the music you play. Specifications describe the design; they do not establish that one bass will sound better in your band or recording.

Neck, scale, weight, and balance

Scale length, neck profile, string spacing, weight, and balance all affect how a bass feels in your hands and on a strap. A specification sheet can help narrow choices, but it cannot tell you whether a neck is comfortable or whether the instrument sits well against your body. Yamaha identifies the BB734A as a four-string electric bass with a 34-inch (863.6 mm) scale on its US product page; that is a concrete reference point, not a guarantee that its dimensions will suit you.

Setup, serviceability, and seller terms

Check that the bass can be adjusted to a comfortable playing setup and that routine service is practical where you live. A higher price does not guarantee that an individual instrument will arrive with a better setup. If possible, try a finalist or ask the seller about setup and inspection. Read the return terms before buying, especially when ordering online, so you know what options you have if the instrument does not feel right.

Four, five, or more strings

Choose string count for the music and playing range you actually need. A five-string may provide a lower range without changing instruments, while a six-string is a more specialized choice for players who specifically want its added range. More strings are not automatically an upgrade; spacing and neck feel matter, too.

Reference models and dated price examples

A practical way to choose

  1. Set a real budget. Include any necessary setup or service in the amount you can spend, and compare local prices in the same currency and market.
  2. Write down your use case. Note the styles you play, whether you need four or five strings, and whether you want active EQ or a simpler control layout.
  3. Shortlist by feel and configuration. Compare neck profile, scale, string spacing, weight, balance, pickup layout, and controls. Do not treat a longer feature list as proof of a better fit.
  4. Try your finalists if possible. Play seated and standing, check whether the neck and string spacing feel comfortable, and see whether the bass balances on a strap.
  5. Check setup and return terms. Confirm the seller’s return policy and ask what inspection or setup is included, particularly for an online order.
  6. Verify the live offer. Confirm current price, stock, and the exact model or regional variant on the manufacturer’s or retailer’s listing before purchasing.

One public r/Bass discussion phrases the concern as “what a good budget for an intermediate bass that would last a long time?” That is one player’s question, not evidence of a consensus price. Durability cannot be inferred from price alone: consider the instrument’s condition, serviceability, seller support, and whether it remains comfortable and useful as your playing develops.

Optional accessories

A compatible gig bag, tuner, strap, cable, or replacement strings may be useful, but none is automatically required with every purchase. Check that a bag fits the bass, the cable connectors match your equipment, and replacement strings suit the model and scale.
